Got an email from the saleslady I bought my truck from 4 months ago.
In part .. And kinda what makes me worry just a bit was .. It said:

As a reminder, if you haven't already, your complimentary ToyotaCare service is due at 5 months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. It is important for a Toyota service facility to see your vehicle within the next month, even if you don't have 5,000 miles yet. You will be receiving an email from our service department within a week or so with your pre-scheduled appointment date and time. Should that time not work, please call our service department at (406) 755-6060.

We will be performing the following services at your first ToyotaCare appointment:
    • Engine oil and filter change
      Conventional oil - Yes
      Synthetic oil - No
    • Tire rotation - Yes
    • Tire pressure check and adjustment - Yes
    • 19 point fluid and visual inspection - Yes
    • Fluid replenishment - Yes
OK, most of this is a big nothingburger.
I can take care of 99% of this myself.
What struck me was the oil/filter change...
I was told.. At time of purchase ... The engine was full synthetic oil ... No need for a change till 10K miles.
If I was told '10k oil/filter change' Synthetic ... Why would I need a recommended oil/filter change at 5K and they replace the oil with 'conventional' oil? Why would I go backwards?
Is this a 'form' email that means nothing? Is Toyota, or the dealer lying to me about what kind of oil came in the crank from the factory? Should I just plan on doing my own oil/filter change on my own (which I was gonna do anyway) at 2.5K and just keep my mouth shut, and knowing what is IN the engine? (I'm a big believer in synth oil and quality filters..)
I'm waiting to hear back from the email sent me, but this is a bit disturbing... And I'm not really sure if this is a 'form' email and maybe the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing..
    Any thoughts/advice?

they don't change the oil at the first visit. They will check your floor mats, and not spot the leaking battery. They will change the oil on your 10000 mile check up. Toyotacare...it's the bees knees!

The tech will use full synthetic. Sometimes they are smarter than the sales people. Reply what your manual states to her in a response 9th is correct about 5k and 10k service though.

I personally haven’t seen a 0w oil that is conventional?
I’m sure it made somewhere? But not sure why you’d use it in the Tacoma?
    And @ 10k OCI?

    • doesnt that state that they will not do an oil filter change if you have synthetic oil?

I was told the same thing and I ignored it and I service my taco myself. No need to wait 6 hours for a tire rotation.

That's kinda' what I thought... (And like I'm gonna spend all day sitting on a hard plastic chair while the wrench-monkeys pick their noses..)
    But here's the real thing...
On one hand .. The Toyota dealer with their (3/30) warranty says one thing. But then you get an email from them that says something else.
I'm sure, if I took it into the dealer for a 5K 'checkup' they would come at me with something like:
'We found a lady-bug lodged in the fins of your radiator! Good thing you brought it in for inspection! Otherwise you might have been stuck in Death Valley and your engine over heating and then WHO KNOWS WHAT might have happened THEN?? ... Since yer standard warranty doesn't cover this, we can fix this prob for $400.00 .. And since yer a new customer, we'll give you The New Customer Discount on that..'
    Yeah, been there....
I'm more prone to keep detailed records and receipts and do stuff myself.
I'll let them do the tire-rotation though, just because I don't wanna. And hope if I ever get a flat, that some air-gun monkey didn't put the lug nuts on at 200 psi ...

Got the same email with my 4R after I had bought it and took it in to see what they said and they told me that the service was due at 10k and not 5k and if I wanted it done before “service interval” I’d have to pay.

    I walked out.

It's a form email, don't over think it. Get your free tire rotation and move on. I got some TSB numbers from here on TW and made them do the TSBs, that made the time at the dealer with the trip. Oh, and the free donuts were good.

Free donuts you say? Well, how can I pass that up? LOL!
Yeah, I do (so says my wife) tend to over-think stuff. But I'm like a deer ... My head is always on a swivel thinking 'OK, what's trying to kill me now?' .. Ehh ... Set in my ways.
Well, being the nearest dealer for me is an hour each way ... I can do my own tires and save myself 2-3 hours which would better be spent drinking beer at home..
I do wanna hear what the sales-lady says about my email though.. so we'll see.

This should read "I'm like a wolf... My head is always on a swivel thinking 'OK, what am I going to kill next?'"

    Stay strong Kings

The donuts tho, can't pass that up

    This.

If your car comes with 0W16 or 0W20, the interval is 10,000 miles.
If your car comes with 5W20 or 5W30, the interval is 5,000 miles.

There is no oil change at 5,000 miles for 2016+ Tacomas.

Haven't rigs for like the last 15 years come (Factory) with synthetic? My mother-in-laws 05' Subaru has a sticker under the hood about 'Use Synthetic Oil Only!' ... I just assumed that anything new/newish hadn't come with old 'dino' oil for quite awhile now.

Interesting, I was told that if I wanted it done before the interval it would simply count against the remaining oil changes.

    It didn't state one-way-or-the-other...
But as others have said, I'm reading too much into it ...
Generic email thing... But I thought 'It's a 2020 .. Does any mfg even use 'dino' oil anymore? Why would this even be mentioned?
That's why I even questioned as to 'What do I really have?'
In a way, Toyota kinda' brings this on themselves.

The Tacoma used 5W30 non-synthetic until 2015 in the 4.0L.

The last Toyota in North America that used non-synthetic was probably the 2019 Yaris Hatchback, as of 2020 they're all either 0W20 or 0W16.

Toyota hasn't used synthetic from the factory for any grade other than 0W20 or 0W16 that I can think of in anything except the 2012 Lexus LFA, at least in North America.
