You can remove what ever was welded to the frame, grind and paint it.. you would never know the difference.

I can see that, he was pressuring me hard to buy from him, cause "he was going to be the nice guy and not report it but sell it to a whole seller and he wont know so it wouldn't fall back on him cause it went to the whole seller. He also said that since hes nice (lol lying sack of shit) he would just buy it at a low price, but I should be careful and I should not go to another dealer cause they WILL claim it and put it on carfax. Kinda almost sounded like a treat, thats when i really walked away fast.......

Not trying to be argumentative here, but lots of people wheel Tacomas, so you could say that is how they are supposed to be used. Toyota touts them as being tough with commercials that put the truck off road and being used as a vehicle to get you off the beaten path. Sliders, bumpers, brackets, etc. are a integral part of wheeling. That being said, why do 3/4 tons& 1 tons get this preferential treatment as a vast majority of them never leave pavement, much less become plow trucks?

"The higher the heat, the faster the metal reaches the over-aged, or weakened, state. Post-weld heat treatment can correct this, as long as you carefully select the filler metal to match the base metal's aging characteristics."

This is a quote from a fabrication article found on the web. We run a farm equipment sales/service/repair business as a family here in CA. I know from experience that if metal is overheated (IE during welding process), it is weakened structurally.

SO - a dealer using the term "frame damage" & consequently reducing the value of the truck is probably a safeguard. They put the safeguard in place because not EVERYONE knows how to weld. Is it possible that someone can perform a quality weld on a Tacoma frame without reducing structural integrity of the metal?? Sure! BUT - is it possible that the next guy to try the same job overheats the frame metal during welding and weakens the frame??? Of course.

If it were me, I would remove the front mounted hitch regardless of who I was trying to sell it to. It would just be one more thing to have to explain to a buyer, & possibly open up an objection to a purchase.

    =)

What is quoted is true in the automotive sales business. My wife is employed buy one of the largest used car auto auctions in the US. Her job is accounting, but somehow she and some of the other workers were asked to take the training course on inspecting vehicles brought in by dealers for auction. After her training completed, we were having dinner one night and she was talking about the training. She was telling me that any modifications to the frame such as drilled holes or welding are classified as frame damage and the value plummets.

Yes you could weld stuff on, then remove it and smooth it over, possibly going undetected. No argument.

Consider drilled holes carefully, especially on newer or higher end vehicles.

Myself, I have a set of BAMF sliders installed on my truck. These are the bolt on style. Love the sliders. The installation utilizes oem frame holes for the vertical surface mounting. This is good. The remainder of the bolts are supposed to install in holes drilled by the installer along the frames lower rail. These will be very obvious and difficult to hide, maybe part of my hesitation to drill them.

She mentioned other big loss in value mods, but I don't recall them all.

    Best answer ever.

I could make a case for it if it's poorly done, that would be a legit issue. If it's nicely done, I could make a case for it based on metallurgy and the temper of the metal, but I would be doing it solely to screw you out of five grand. I don't know which is the case, but I suspect that in any case these aren't people I'd want to do business with. Good luck.

ETA: the guys above seem to have the background, make some good points, and it looks like my metallugy comment had a point, and my supposition about the dealer out of line. I'll say this: I used to weld and I sure as hell wouldn't buy any vehicle that's had any aftermarket welding work done on it.
