Those old transformer welders are the Toyota’s of welders. I’m not even sure how old mine is to be honest. My brother had it for years in Montana and I long term leased it (eventually giving him what he paid for it).

On the original liner…wow. Kinda like having a classic car. Pretty cool.

The biggest reason is the cats are too close to the frame. Another reason is too thin of steel to meet EPA mileage requirements and to meet number cruncher requirements.

The frame not being made from one piece of steel isn't why the frames fail from rust. I do not and have not ever worked for Toyota. I do not have a engineering degree. From scratch/raw steel trailer frames, half of a truck frame for a SAS, and a couple of complete hot rod frames.

I have welded 2 pieces that were riveted together by the factory on that SAS job.

And my previous comment was over the top and unnecessary. My sincerest apologies.

it sounds as if you don't know how to weld...

tackling something structural??? i guarantee you will ruin it and possibly the whole truck. probably injur yourself...

    where do you live???

do not attempt this, FIND ONE OF US THAT IS NEAR YOU, to do it for you.

I know how to weld but I MIG weld exhaust pipes sometimes stainless manifolds; not frames that have rust issues.
Maybe its mostly metal treatment like i said before if you have multiple pieces of metal this is just spaces water can get into. Everything I am finding on this frame is all where water got into grooves some big enough to put end of screwdriver in between the two pieces of metal.
So no matter what the reason too many spaces = water getting in and sitting there.

The CATs being too close to the frame and thin metal is good info. I know how close the CATs are but did not know the metal is so much thinner there. I will say the frame does make a weird narrow shape the closet in gets to connecting with the front area of frame near motor mounts.

For those of you who do not like my posts feel free not to listen.

But for those who want to contribute something real answer this.

How many other frames have you encountered that are made from this many different pieces of metal? On vehicles made in last 30 years? You speak as if this is completely common....
