So the other day I discovered some crackhead tried to steal my catalytic converter. They must have been caught because they cut halfway through my passenger side cat but didn’t take it. Anyway I have comprehensive coverage and insurance will work with me to replace it. However it is back ordered two weeks from Toyota. Has anybody had a shop weld their CAT? I would obviously feel better with a new one but I wouldn’t mind paying $50-$150 to have it welded so I can drive temporarily or even just go that route and not get a complete replacement. I found a reputable shop I just don’t know how solid that kind of repair is. I plan on keeping the truck until it has over 350k miles so I want peace of mind. Has anybody gone the welding route?

Someone attempted to steal the CAT from my 2000 4-Runner. They cut the tailpipe right by the CAT. A muffler shop welded it up for me. $20. Drove it for several years after that. No problems, passed annual inspections etc.

I don't see why you you couldn't run a quick bead weld on the sliced part. If done well it could be a permanent repair.

Any muffler shop can hook you up on the cheap, and if done properly, there's no reason it couldn't be a permanent fix.

    Oh look, another mod....

Wrap it in asbestos. That way if the thieves come back (and steal it), they'll die a slow painful death.

Thanks for the replies, I will take it to a muffler shop today and if it’s affordable I will pull the triggger!
