Looks like you made out pertty good for the circumstances, a couple inches in one direction, a miss the other damage to the body. I've picked up a few scratches and door dings. It takes that newness back a bit. Usually I hope for it after the 10000. Good luck.

That sucks, but not bad. Looks like an exact match my my magnetic grey with the same dent in the same spot. Mine was from a trail mishap, so it's a badge of honor rather than a "some moron hit hit" story

Why would it go bad for the OP? He was parked and someone ran into him.

    1) not an accident, this is more like property damage and not even that much outside of the real costs to fix (see below)

    2) pursue their insurance (see below). Someone driving a 1990 expedition has no idea how much this is going to cost them “cash out of pocket”

    3) why did you bother starting the fix yourself? Now it’s going to be more of a pain to deal with to properly fix your new truck.

    4) real costs will be many hundreds.
    A) painted to match plastic cap
    B) new OEM sensor
    C) calibration - at a Toyota dealer or a body shop that has the official service manual AND training to perform the correct prosecute, has paid for the hardware/software, etc.

What if repairs cost too much - he filed a police report. He has ample time to pursue an insurance claim if things go south; he has all of her information.

Rental car - not needed; its a dented bumper cap; truck operates fine and doesn't need to be in a shop for repairs

Doing work himself - again, its a bumper cap; it snaps on/off with plastic clips; OP gets to decide if its a burden he is or isn't willing to take on, and he's willing to do it/isn't seeking compensation for it.

Rates going up - OP may find more value in someone righting their wrong to him personally and not being punished for years to come by their insurance over a truly miniscule accident. Some people take the other party into consideration when weighing the outcomes of each decision.

OP sounds like a standup guy to me, giving the person the opportunity to right their wrong, and he's also covered himself in case the person didn't hold up their end of the deal. Sure, going through insurance will get it resolved; OP doesn't seem to be looking to scalp somebody for something this small though.

When I worked in sales our manager would buy up lease returns and turn them into CPO's. Some stuff takes a few months for CarFax to get their claws on it. Said CPO was sold accident free with a copy of the CarFax stating so, customer returns a couple of months later with fresh CarFax showing accident, customer pitches fit, manager explains situation and sends customer on their way. o_O

Doesn't look that bad. A new sensor and painted bumper cover is an easy fix. I bought painted bumper covers for mine off eBay to replace the chrome. Not a perfect match, but close enough for the $200 ish I paid for the set.

FYI, That's not BSM. That's the parking sonar. The little round sensors on the outside of the bumper have nothing to do with BSM. The BSM sensor is a rectangle mounted behind the bumper cover. It's also way more expensive.

My post was meant as a general response to an out-of-pocket payment situation vs. specifically to the OP.

    Work in progress...
32 years and then rear ended twice in the same week. first in the wife's Edge then in the Tacoma. Lady that hit the Tacoma called the police and complained "he stopped at the red light." True story, she got a ticket...oK. First one, the wife's car, crossing a grid locked intersection and I had to stop because no where to go but, yeah, no need to run into the vehicle in front of you. Anyways, we just can do the best we can, can't do no more than that.

Common mistake. People assume the sensor they see if the BSM, and it's understandable. Just like people who think the new tundra has "fake V8" sound pumped in when it's actually just sounds from the TT6 in the truck that have been "enhanced" and piped in. It's hilarious how many people get pissed off when given the correct info though. They seem to take it as a personal attack on their intelligence rather that seeing that they were ignorant (not an insult) on the topic.

Tough call on this one but I've never had a bad experience getting paid through insurance.

Definitely intact especially as you weren't moving at the time.

Thankfully they made her. It is disgusting how many people don't own up. Caught a guy who dinged my wife's door pretty good and he lied right to my face with a healthy dose of attitude problem on top. Or the person who caved in both doors on my old car at a league event so I'm sure it was someone I know (who may not have known it was my car but that's not the point).

I could never fathom doing this and not leaving a note, only after waiting a bit to speak to the person face to face.
