February 2022 had a few snowstorms in the Denver area, to which I descended from my rural perch for my friend’s birthday party. I totalled my Impreza on a patch of ice into the back of some person, who decided when they got a flat tire to stop directly in the driving lane, instead of pulling off to the side. In a hurry, I bought a replacement vehicle: a 1995 Toyota T100. After a few months, I got a new Tacoma, but in the meantime, enjoy my tale of struggle with my first restoration project.

I named the T100 Cornifer, after a video game character who explores around and makes maps in his old age — seemed inspiring. He had 280,000 miles, was on his second transmission, a few rust holes on the flanks (“Canadian welding”), and a 4 inch lift give or take, but otherwise on first sight it looked pretty good! I paid $3700 for it and drove it home that day.

What I did to that poor truck: replaced the brake booster, fixed a vacuum system leak, replaced spark plugs, replaced broken stereo, repaired rusty bed, repaired rhino lining, replaced fuel pump and filter, patched leak in gas tank, got new tires, replaced brake shoes and pads, adjusted parking brake, replaced ECU and transmission selector switch, upgraded to LED headlights and brake lights.

What that poor truck did for me: SAR operations in Teller County including assistance in wildfire mitigation.

How he died: I still don’t know. The transmission speed sensor was intermittently working it seems? I had two mechanics look at it, neither could either, and left me with the advice: it’s a money pit, get rid of it.

I hated the idea of parting with it, I loved the damn thing, but the issue was that during normal operation, it would sort of forget how to use a torque converter. Either the engine would suddenly spin free, as if in neutral, or outright stall, leaving me without power steering/power brakes. Three near-accidents on the same day solidified my decision that I had to give it up.

So I bought a ‘22 TRD off-road, silver, I’ll have to add a photo soon, and it’s been flawless. And I named it after the old T100 too.
