No doubt they're working in shifts down at the crime lab; should have a DNA match on the perp any day now.

Is the pop & lock tailgate lock any different than the factory installed one?

I can understand a young girl not wanting to confront a thief, even if she had noticed.

Just wanted to clarify your comment about the spare tire lock easily bypassed - is it the the normal, everyday padlock at the hoist disc? Or is there something at the cranking system?

I put a padlock on the disc at the wheel itself. Not easy to bypass, but a determined crook can get past anything.

10-4. Yes I was quite worried about mine and the first thing I did was add a hard cover + tailgate lock.

I know you’re joking but you can’t blame the cops for not caring too much, it’s gotta be so disheartening for them. Even if they did arrest the thieves, they’d be out stealing more tailgates the next day with little or no consequences.
Until the laws and consequences change for the better, we’ve gotta do whatever we can to secure our own shit.
OP, I’m sorry and it sucks but I’d bet the thieves were either sitting and watching from the entrance of that parking lot or maybe even followed you into the parking lot before they stole it.
Highly doubt the cops are gonna get it back for you, just gotta bite-the-bullet and buy a new one and a lock for it this time....

Do people only comes to this forum like every 5 years?
I am really surprise that some people didn't know (or never heard of) the hose clamp and power tailgate kits (OEM & Pop'N'Lock).
My very first Mod was to add a power lock to my tailgate. I never remember to take out the key to manually lock the gate and unlock it when I get back to the truck.

Sorry, OP, you will have to replace the harness too, it could be thousands of dollars in expense just so some A-hole will sell a tailgate for a couple of hundred buck.

3k is a lot of money. Does insurance cover something like this?

This sucks man. They are super easy to remove but this is bs. This + having bikes in the bed often are the main reasons I installed the electronic lock immediately after receiving my truck.

I also tried to install another product to prevent this that a user on here makes, but I can't get the damn torx screw out of the tailgate that it secures to. That's a project for another day lol.

Not sure. Did not entertain the factory one as it was more expensive to achieve the same thing. Some say the Pop & Lock is loud but I personally like that it is loud. I can hear it actually lock over the factory door locks. I am planning on doing some additional mitigation at some point. Really annoying I have had to do so much to avoid thieves stealing parts off the vehicle (Pop & Lock, Spare wheel lock, cat guards), right out of the gate. Does give me peace of mind.

I put the spare wheel key which snaps onto the hoist then uses a key on the jack rods. Didn't think about the padlock idea. Given I spend alot of time in Utah (fine red dust) and the mag chloride salt combo here in Colorado, most of my locks get corroded fast.

They’re about the same as far as function. I’ve heard a lot the pop n lock is louder. I went OEM because I have more faith in Toyota quality over pop n lock (not to say there’s anything wrong with them, just OEM is OEM). The kit came with everything you need too, with nice plug n play harness/wiring that’s pre-shielded at the part near the exhaust. It was worth the little extra dough to me.
