My reply was genuine advice. I’m a person who values my time on earth more than anything else, so whatever gets me up and running and over the issue is the route I take. In this situation it is having the bumper replaced, and wipe hands clean. If you want to be offended by it by all means.

    Great idea!

He makes a claim on his collision policy that he’s liable for so his rates go up. Fantasic plan!

To be fair, BSM wasn't working. Backup cam was though.

Ah. Thought it happened after the BSM fix. Wonder what Idiot Backup Sensors will be available in the future. Call it IBS(not Irritable bowel syndrome). Maybe it will deploy airbags around the truck when you get 3 inches from a object.

It didn't. They were attempting to pull it around to get started on it.

Almost as good of a plan as posting here to find an answer you should already know from vehicle ownership.

    Ask for diminished value compensation.

If this gets reported to CarFax as an accident, you will lose thousands upon resale.

He doesn’t have to actually file but he can show his insurance policy so they can see what the deductible is. Now whether they agree only if he gets proof that he paid the deductible, and then reimburse him then, then yes, I wouldn’t go through with it if I were the OP but doesn’t hurt to try just asking.

Ask for a bed mat if you don’t already have one, full tank of fuel and a wash/detail or any of the above, MSRP on the mat is $120, so dealer cost is probably like half of that or just past half, that shouldn't break their bank but that mat is one of the best things you can get for your truck bed. Does not hurt to try, doesn’t mean you’re playing victim. If they want you as a customer, or feel embarrassed about the whole thing then all I mentioned for the OP to ask for is also reasonable.

If it’s going to get reported to Carfax, you should ask for accelerated depreciation. A dirty carfax is worth about $1k in trade in.

Just a heads up for anyone worried about getting rear ended, put a long ass hitch on, about 6 inches off the truck or so. Then the person who rear ended you will learn a lesson

Agreed. Also, no way would I ever make a claim on my insurance for this. Have them pay in cash and include diminished value because, like it or not, something that has been wrecked and or repaired is worth less on trade. I like the cash idea because I’d get a real rear bumper with it. If the shop is cool about it, let them fix it on their dime to your satisfaction if you don’t want a different bumper. If you plan on keeping the truck for a long time I’m not sure I would push the diminished value issue. Even then, it wouldn’t be that much.

Do NOT get your insurance involved... Why would you do that?? You'll end up paying for it multiple times until you're ~25 and you'd be screwed.

Get them to pay for it and don't report it to anyone. Or do as everyone else said, get cash and buy something better. They messed up and if they / you did report it under insurance then make them pay the loss of value on top of the repairs/loaner. You may have a hard time getting loss of value but it's possible.

This happens a lot more than you think. Porters aren't the sharpest tools in the shed and don't care as much as they should sometimes. Things happen.

My brother had a hitch and tube bumper on his old Gen 1. Got rear ended on the Oakland Bay Bridge in a hit and run. Followed the ATF, engine oil and coolant trail with a cop down the road to the culprit’s disabled car a few miles past the bridge

If they are not self-insured they may report it through their insurance, which means Carfax probably gets the report...
