Maybe it’s because trucks now a days are just as roomy as an suv, they hold their value better, you can put a topper on them to make it an suv and remove if needed, and best of all can haul something other than groceries. Or just be like some of us and have a truck and an suv. Now do you understand?

Not for me as I normally have stinky wet ass dogs, dirty gear, and let's not mention towing. 4runners are amazing and I would probably have one over a Tacoma if it fit MY needs better. These end all be all opinions about one being better are so subjective.

Was in a stock double cab limited and a stock double cab off road.

In current configuration, yes my 4R isn’t comparable to a stock Tacoma. However, in stock form I still prefer the 4R over the Tacoma. I’ve had two 5th gen 4Runners and when I got my 17 4R the Tacoma wasn’t even a consideration after my experience at Hotel Tacoma. My personal preference is the quality and refinement of the 4R. It’s got all the cool Offroad gadgets the Tacoma has and is equally capable in stock form.

Ok that explains things a little more. 4runners are no doubt fabulous and just as capable with the correct operator I'll agree, but not correct or perfect for every user.

I didn’t mean better for your needs specifically. I meant it’s just a better built vehicle all around

Not in all experiences. My buddies 2018 4runner rattles, has cheap grey plastic rubbing now becoming black, and he definitely wishes he had a Tacoma. Again this Japanese built 4runner rattles and shows more wear than my awful first run 16 Tacoma. So your statement is an opinion and not necessarily fact.

Maybe I'm stirring the pot here but cant this also be said about the Highlander over the 4runner? If we are comparing SUV's the Highlander is no doubt the more refined, sophisticated, technological, faster, smoother, better shifting, comfortable vehicle etc. Since that's what all 4runners owners care about right? :stirthepot: with this being said, it's obviously the better built vehicle right? See what I did there?

Easy, I like the looks, how they drive, and having the bed when I do need to haul stuff.

Probably 95% of truck owners don't "need" a truck.

So you haul stuff and use the bed . Makes sense why you'd want a truck.

The Highlander is AWD, the 4R is 4WD with available e-locker; sorry, there's no comparison! Maybe if you put the HiHi up against the RAV4? :hattip:

Yeah, but I could get by without it, is my point. I don't haul much stuff that I couldn't put in an SUV.

Hey now we aren't talking about the 4wd system. I'm talking about what almost everyone considers advantages over the Tacoma. Comfort, shifting, smoothness, refinement. The "better built" argument. I agree with you there is no comparison on the 4x4 system in Highlander vs 4runner. Who has ever said they ONLY got the 4runner over the Tacoma because of the superior 4x4 system? (Unless we are talking about the limited AWD 4runner.)

right there with you. I drive a truck because I want to, not out of necessity. but I can honestly say, every time I don't have a truck for a while I find myself missing one and wanting another. that is the reason I have my Taco. I drove F150s for 7 years straight, then traded for a Subaru Crosstrek. at the time my daughter was racing mountain bikes and we were driving all over the place. so the Subaru saved me a ton on gas. but one day someone brought a 2nd Gen Taco into the shop for some window tint and that was all it took. my love for trucks came back over me and the Subaru went bye bye. I am sure if I were to ever trade it for a 4R I would have the same feeling, hence why I haven't traded. I like em all, and I like all brands (except GM).

Agreed. I don't have dogs but I would hate to trash the back of a 4runner with debris going to the dump. I also much prefer cleaning a deer in the back of the truck and not having to worry about getting blood on the carpet or seats.

No. Highlander is a car chassis. Not a good comparison. Current gen 4R is a land cruiser chassis, same as Lexus GX, both are Land Cruiser Prado.

Guess it boils down to usage. 4R and Taco are trucks. Highlander is a tall Camry.
