I figure hot-swapping (smaller) batteries would become a thing, like carrying a can of gas.

every weekend 10hr drive , at least 500 extra bucks in gas you must be paying vs 50 bucks at charging stations in your state http://solvingev.com/browse-locations/state/mt-montana

To save that much money I would think “wasting time” waiting around to charge up is worth saving 450 bucks a month.

In fact you are going to benefit the most , financial. One less oil change in that month. Less maintenance as well for your +2000 miles a month

Where do you get $500 in gas for 10 hours of driving? It’s like three fill ups, max. Whether you care to admit it to yourself or not, you really come across more as trolling and add nothing to the conversation. Jackass.

Roughly 80% of Americans live in urban areas, obviously EV adoption will (and is) happen faster in the places where it makes sense. I don't think anybody expects gas to go away in rural areas for a while, much like how horses were still popular after cars came around.

If, for whatever reason, gasoline prices double in a short period of time, it would push many people now sitting on the fence into the EV camp.

When gas is relatively inexpensive, consumers gravitate towards big vehicles and think nothing about driving long distances for pleasure just because, imo.

"small set of standard EV battery form factors that can be quickly interchanged at a "swap station"."

They won't do that. They'll build cars with 500 different battery combinations in an attempt to force people to return to the dealers for service and also force obsolescence over time. Same old movie just electric instead of ICE.

Yeah, obviously things would develop slower in the rural areas for a host of reason. It was a statement more for the one individual (or others) that seem to have an all or nothing mentality. That EVs are perfect for any and every person and always the better option.

I saw this idea on Motorweek several years back. It was a taxi company in NYC I believe. My assumption is that it didn't pan out. It was a neat idea. The taxis could drive into a garage like a jiffy lube and a robot swapped the battery from underneath.

This is going to sound very far out, but from what I have read:

Anybody that is thinking EV without also thinking about the next step- autonomous vehicles, is missing the big picture imo.

There is a race going on right now between nations/ corporations to crack the artificial intelligence (AI) puzzle.

It is somewhat similar to the race during WWII to create nuclear weapons, but there is a lot more riding on the outcome.

Autonomous vehicles will be one of the byproducts of this race, and private vehicle ownership will disappear for all but the very wealthy.

At that point, charging becomes unimportant, since the vehicle will just drive itself to some remote charging station and a fully charged one will be there to take its place.

Its rather scary to imagine this happening imo, but it’s coming maybe faster than anybody thinks- I was just watching home movies with my wife from 30 years ago and it seems like yesterday...lol

Wait till all the oil's been drilled out of the Earth and it starts shrinking, and sinkholes appear everywhere... Then your EV, ICE vehicles & your home will fall into these sinkholes.

    Then what? :D

This^^^. How are people in California charging their cars when they shut off the grid because its windy? Granted a gas station may not pump fuel...You can get a hand pump in a pinch.

I’ve been saying this whole time we should live underground. That would be our foot in the door.

    Yes!

    I agree with you.

However, as I drive around I do see many “distracted drivers”, apparently looking at their phones while driving, or maybe just eating or fumbling with some device.

I would imagine there are lots of people who will gladly give up their freedom of movement so they can text their friends or watch cat videos...lol

I remember when I was younger, and hearing adults talk how important the right to privacy was, for many important reasons. The idea that so many people could “care less” about having every last detail of what they are doing, where they are going, what they are spending their money on data logged by multiple organizations is mind boggling- to me at least.

    Cheers

I would add one thing.......not purely an ELEC vs ICE thing, but ownership of the vehicle as we know it is meaningless unless their are protections from the manufacturer simply making software decision based on ownership of the license.

You dont own the SW on your truck today. Not a big deal, I suppose, but if that becomes more pervasive in the shift to ELEC vehicles, there is a real possibility of a manufacturer holding your truck hostage by sending a poison pill and demanding $$$ for whatever feature you thought you owned.

So until it is clarity, older vehicles have allot of appeal for me.

Conceptually a great idea. I believe that implementation would be challenging, and that the batteries actually sometimes have structural integrity duties. Plus, as battery technology evolves, compatibility isn’t quite like 93 octane going into a new engine design.

Government is about the only way we could force this opportunity. I’m all for it if possible.

We mention the Saudis ONCE and politic posters flock to this thread. It’s like they sense a disturbance in the force.
