Starting in Nov in California there will be a new 12% tax added to diesel fuel and 4% added to diesel vehicle sales tax so this state is taking away benefits to owning a diesel.

This year it's on pace for around 200k. It is most certainly a high volume vehicle.

Your rant has truth to it. However, you need to recognize your rant is applicable to EVERY car manufactured in 2017. Toyota is not unique and generally is still building better quality automobiles than other companies.

Want less plastic? Buy a top of the line Mercedes or Range Rover for $120k+.

I'd like to see a higher payload payload capacity and a regular cab w/ 8' bed option too.

Oh I know, that's why I stated that I "would like" an increase in displacement. Ford's coming first with their F-150 and others will follow suit.

The Tacoma did not even place in the top 20 best selling vehicles in the Country, shit like Hyundai are even on that list. I would not say a Tacoma is a slow seller by any means but I just don't view it as a high volume vehicle.

Those are high numbers for a mid sized truck

Thank you all for the responses and the generous amount of info. Much appreciated. i love the looks of the new Taco and I still have a lot of respect for the brand.

No, I am not living in the past, just yearning for a better present.

While the Unimogs are nice reliable rides, the mid-size is what I really need. Even a full size Tundra would be too much car for what I need to move around and definitely much more than I can afford to buy and use. No shame in admitting that. Just like many of you I work hard for each penny and I am trying to get as much value as possible for what I spend.

The care that goes into routing a simple electrical cable, or a single screw, translates into the care that goes into the way the entire car is assembled. Leaking pumpkin out of a Toyota assembly line? Where is the quality control?

I will continue to read the forum with interest but i will not post much. Come to think of it, my rant was pretty useless... :)

Although not holding my breath, I am still trying to figure out if the 2018 Taco is improving, getting ready to buy the new model in Oct - Nov '17 if and when they arrive at the local dealer.

As much as I never thought I'd consider a Jeep, if Jeep comes up with a diesel 4 door Wrangler pick up, or the Kaiser, I will give it a try.

Chevy seems to put a lot of hope in their ZR2 diesel mid-size truck, just like the Frontier... (Without a MT, I wouldn't consider either of them as a feasible option)

    https://www.chevrolet.com/content/d...2/mov/02-pdfs/Colorado-ZR2-Compare-PDF_V1.pdf

Fortunately, very soon I'll be happy to drive a Troopie V8 4.6 L diesel with a manual tranny for a 5,000+ Km long haul, out of which about 4,500 Km are off road with about 2,000 Km of severe off road in a very remote area. Most probably the Taco could do it too, but I am happy to get back in the saddle of a 2010 V8 diesel Troopie that can carry 400 litres of fuel, water and food for 2 weeks, tools and a couple of spare parts, camping gear, etc.

Cheers and once again, thank you for all the valuable responses.

LE: Someone asked about a pic of the old 4Runner. Here it goes, flying through the puddle, like a silly commercial... :)

BTW, when I purchased the 4Runner, the dealer told me that it is close to impossible to get a MT in the North East because most people in my area drive ATs... :) They eventually agreed to "speciai order" it, but it came without a locker, hence the ARB rear locker.
