Hi all, new to this thread, but not so new to Western Mass or tacomas. My 2003 2.7L just triggered a P0420 code this morning; low catalyst efficiency. This truck was originally sold in NY, so it has two CARB compliant cats, which incidentally were replaced under federal emissions warranty in 2010 for the same code (my father owned the truck at the time).

While I suspect that this code means the cats are bad (it's rarely something else), it's worth noting that that exhaust is rather rusty and the muffler is noisy. There could be an exhaust leak somewhere that tripped the code, but the muffler has been noisy for the last year, so that doesn't perfectly correlate with the code being triggered.

I'm posting here to seek recommendations for reputable exhaust shops in the Pioneer Valley (I'm in Amherst) that can bring the truck into compliance for minimal expense. I would rather not pay for CARB compliant cats if it's not required, especially on an 18 year old truck, but some shops may not be flexible in that regard. Similarly, could this truck be legally operated in MA with only one cat? Looking forward to some informative replies...thanks!

 

I know of Pugsleys. I don't go there but have friends who do, and I sorta know his sister.

100%. Not as much land as you have(3/4 acre) but its quiet and not far from shopping and a busy area.

I had people telling me to buy intown, but I don't want to be that close to people. I was shown a few places in town. 1/8 acre, and everybody was just super ontop of each other.

 

Not the closest option but I have used Ed’s Custom Muffler in Indian Orchard (Springfield) which was quick and very reasonable pricing.

 

It may be a ways from Amherst, but I have always ymused "service connection" exhaust in Monson MA. He has done a lot of both typical and custom exhaust work for me.

 

Thanks for the leads. After posting, I noticed an exhaust leak at the flange between the second cat and the muffler…just upstream of the second o2 sensor. Need a new muffler anyway, so hopefully addressing that leak will solve the trouble code.

Dealers are slow AF these days, they have no motivation and do not care. What a job to find something at msrp, and then trying to get it out of the dealers hands....

"oh we don't work today" umm its wednesday bro

"theres some big forms you need to fill out to do it through a business" it was 1 page and 3 things the finance manager had to fill in, took a full day

"I can see if I can get someone to run the paperwork to get you plates" Umm, I can do that myself, just fucking give it to me already and I'll be back in an hour

I had a hyundai dealer in northhampton sell me a USED CAR AS NEW and NOT HAVE A TITLE FOR IT. After 2 weeks of silence and no answers I was able to cancel it after reaching out to the fucking AG.


I cannot wait until you can just order right from the manufacturer and kill these dirtbag dealers. Service is all you need from a dealer, the sales people suck.

 

Beaut, it took me 4 days just to get the dealer and my insurance company to get on board with each other. I picked it up June 30th, and my car insurance is still fucked, they still have 15 on there and my 21. Then they took the 21 off etc etc etc. My agent blames corporate, corporate blames the agent. ALLSTATE SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSS is all I got. I switch to Liberty Mutual next week and save $1500.00 in the end.
