I've been going to Headwaters Outfitters near Brevard since I was a kid. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Bonus: they serve beer.

They're situation at the intersection of Rosman highway (64) and highway 215, which is a straight shot up to the blue ridge parkway, which you can take up to highway 276, stopping at overlooks on the way. Then, 276 takes you back down to Brevard, where a popular ice cream stand, Dolly's, and a mountain bike bar, the Hub, are located. You didn't ask for this info, but there are great breweries and restaurants all through and around Brevard, including one of the two Oscar Blues Brewery's in the country. They usually have live music, like bluegrass, and usually a food truck.

The best spot in that area is 185 King Street, a music venue that also houses my favorite brewery in the country, Noblebrau. They specialize in German style beers.

 

If you go through Brevard/Rosman the only one I know about is Headwaters outfitters heading up to Sapphire on the right. There could be a few more up in Highlands.

We liked Ecusta brewery when we went there too.

 

Yeah! Also a great spot with live music. There's a surprising amount of great musicians that play those few breweries and bars in the area.

And if you get closer to Hendersonville there's plenty of spots too. @N64_Wallmaster and I didn't even mention all the breweries in Asheville too.

 

Hey Guys, I’m Nolan. I’m in WNC here. Never knew this thread existed. I work at a dealership, in the parts department. If anyone ever needs taco/4runner-specific help, I’d love to assist. Here are my trucks! I do some light 4x4ing towards DuPont occasionally and mob around town in my 2wd lol.

 

Oh yeah. Sierra Nevada, on the way to Asheville, is like the Wonka World of beer. It's insane. I've also always been a fan of Wicked Weed, even though they were absorbed by Anheuser-Busch. Honestly, good for them for making beer good enough to sell internationally.

That area of WNC, around Pisgah, is my favorite place in the country.

 

Nice trucks! As a local expert, where are the best 4x4 trails in WNC? Are there really offroading trails in DuPonte?

 

LOL, definitely not an expert but I've gone out a few times. I'm not sure if I'd call them "trails" as it's more of a service/hunting road (public use) with some trails scattered up and down the sides of the road. Can be a good time if you're just looking for a quick run.

 

I've been known to stop by Hillman's brewing for a Cuban sandwich and a beer from time to time too.

 

That's a new one for me. Will have to check it out.

 

Yep up sweeten Creek Rd. Towards Biltmore, if you keep going you run right into the Biltmore estate. That's where we take the dog hiking sometimes.

My girlfriend and I are officially making the move to WNC.

We spent this past weekend in the area, and the overall sense of peace from the mountain air, or whatever it is, maybe the hypnotic forces of Native American spirits… who knows. It’s a special place and we want to be a part of it full time.

We’re currently looking at houses in Asheville north of downtown, west Asheville (though not a huge favorite), black mountain, Arden, and around. Coolest place would be up in Belvedere, but nothing there except for retirees holding on to houses.

Any suggestions of where else we should look?

Also, what are y’all go to off-roading trails? Looking for anything above 2 out of 5 difficulty.

 

That's cool! How far out of town are you willing to go? I live NW of Avl. and it's quiet, but it takes me 30 mins. to get to town.

 

If it were up to me, we'd live in a remote cabin up a mountain road nowhere near Ash! Haha. But my girlfriend is heavily emphasizing being around shops and restaurants, and to her, ideally in walking distance. However, I think we're happy to meet somewhere in the middle, say 15-20 minutes from city center.

 

That said, I bet if we find a cool place with really great mountain views, she'd be cool with living further out.

 

Waynesville has all that and less of the BS that you’ve got to deal with in Asheville. I lived in Clyde and spent 90% of my time in Waynesville. Only hit Asheville for sportsman’s warehouse and REI lol

 

You bet. We went to the neighbors house on Friday and had to use 4wd to get there, just up the hill from our house. Go to my mom's and sisters 4wd. Another neighbor does water crossing. Depends on where you're going. The 2 houses above me must have 4wd or AWD no exceptions. There's a place that just went on sale near us 4.25 acres $400,000.
