Installed the bumper. Love the look. Bsm being a fickle b. Anyone have experience in adjusting and or recalibration to get it working?

Talked to westin and they recommend i have the dealer calibrate but the dealer says the mesh is metal and thats the cause. So they recommend i cut out the mesh. I'm waiting to make a decision as I don't mind not using it for now. Backup sensors work fine and the bumper looks great.

Try the Apogee rear bumper. It keeps the BSM functional, as well as the back-up sensors. I have had mine on for about 2 weeks and it works just like the OEM.

    Are the BSM covers plastic?

Approximately 105 pounds without accessories (for the BSM compatible bumper).

Looking at the Westin Pro Series rear bumper also. Did you guys ever get the BSM working? Westin website says not compatible, but it may be for liability and not functionality. Apogee bumper is $1000 more than the Westin.

I was actually looking into the same bumper last year and found some documentation online that the wired mesh had to be removed for BSM to work.

Did y’all get it to work?

I didn’t pull the trigger on the Westin because I didn’t think the BSM solution would look good (or possibly error out from dirt/mud)….

Then I was hoping to find a solution to relocate my BSM to the tail light rather than keep it in the bumper so I could use the newer version of the FabFours bumper that’s on my older older Tacoma - https://fabfours.com/product/toyota-tacoma-premium-rear-bumper/) —- eventually I ran into another dead end….

I know that Apogee makes rear bumper with BSM capability but I’d prefer to keep the stock receiver hitch instead of hiding it behind the license plate… I was also concerned about how well the BSM will age in direct UV light as well as the extra ~1,000 cost.

Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million!

I posted a pic on anther thread,” BSM and aftermarket bumpers.” I did not have to remove the hitch. The bumper sits on top of the hitch. The bumper sits a little higher than the OEM bumper, and it is a lot better looking. The Westin bumper was a grand shipped. I read a thread on this forum saying the metal mesh interferes with the BSM radar so I went to a machine shop and had them remove the mesh before I installed the bumper. There is a bracket for each BSM in the corners of the bumper. Install the BSM’s before you mount the bumper. The bracket swivels so you can try to get the orientation right before you mount the bumper. The bracket can be adjusted with 2 bolts underneath the bumper. The BSM’s must be mounted horizontally at a 50 degree angle plus or minus 3 degrees and 90 degrees vertically. I bought a digital compass to help me get it right. When you remove the OEM bumper, be careful removing the parking spot monitors. They are very delicate. I had to cut a lot of the factory zip ties to stretch the cables to the BSM’s. I also had to buy an extension for the electrical connection for the hitch. The Westin bumper comes with 2 LED license plate lights. Of course, the connectors don’t match the OEM ones so you have to cut them off and wire them directly. Turn the BSM switch OFF on the dash until you are ready to road test. If you have them oriented correctly, I think you can avoid a trip to Toyota. At first, I did not research the required orientation, and the BSM system faulted within 30 minutes of driving. Once you get the BSM Unavailable message, only Toyota can clear it with their Techstream software. An OBD will not clear the fault. I initially replaced a corner cap and bracket, which was cracked, that held the BSM, and everything worked fine, but I decided I needed more protection. On the OEM bumper, a thin piece of plastic is all that separates the BSM from an expensive repair. That’s the reason I sprung for the metal bumper. The good news is I have a sharper looking bumper and have retained the functionality of both the BSM’s and the Parking Spot Monitors.
