I have a friend who owns a 11' Tacoma, and recently bought a boat. The ramp he used was quite shallow so he back the truck in quite far, getting the rear drums under water I guess. When he tried to drive out, the rear drums had locked up from water in them and were only able to be released after beating them with a hammer.

I have never heard of this on here. I try to not put my truck in the water when launching, but some ramps are quite shallow so it does happen at times. Is this a normal issue, or did he have a once in a million experience?

Lots of possibilities but I would want to inspect them. We usually only see tacoma parking brakes stick after parking overnight.

But you're backing a hot diff and brakes into water and rapidly cooling them off, so leway needs to be given.

That said I would inspect where the ebrake cable enters the rear brake backing plate, they tend to brake at the cable and cause issues with adjustments being too tight.

This pic has where the cable enters, also if its wet/soaked with oil like this, it's another possible cause for locking up.

I'm on my second Tacoma now and have never had an issue with my brakes locking up after launching or retrieving boats. I quite often back down a ramp or beach until my exhaust pipe is gurgling and the water is a bit under the door sill so I'm quite sure my brakes are getting wet. So I think your situation is unique. Probably time to service those brakes.

If you or your friend are backing in that deep I think I’d be concerned about getting water into the rear differential through the breather tube.

Its my budds truck, like i said I don't even get my wheels wet launching, but haven't used the ramp he had issues with. Ill mention the diff breather to him.

Its fresh water so no issue there.

Thanks for responses. Id never heard of this, and just wanted to make sure if it was a big issue or a fluke.

Several threads around on the topic. Almost always after sitting a period of time with ebrake engaged after being soaked.

Are you saying his froze in the few moments it took to launch, while still in the water?

    That would be something new.

Yes they froze while in the water. He said he had to put it in 4-wheel drive and just mash the throttle to get it up the ramp out of the water.
I'm just asking questions on this because I would like to cover myself in case it's an issue. He's super pissed off and looking at selling his Tacoma now because of this.

never even realized this was a thing that happened to people. my truck doesen't have e brakes, so when im launching my boat (has to be backed in quite far so the drums get dunked) i just have somone stand on the braked and available incase it needs to be pulled up. But ive never had drum brakes stick on me.

However, many illogical things stimulate economic markets.

Send him our thanks. And point out that the new Ranger will be available soon.

I’ve had my parking brake stick on me after driving through water off-road, then the truck sitting overnight. It unstuck on its own after pumping the brakes a bit.

Heh, I've backed deep enough for the boat to float every time I've launched. The exhaust is always burbling. Brakes getting wet are not an issue.

    This issue screams neglected maintenance.
A brake job is cheaper than a new truck. Got to wonder what else has been neglected.
