I am getting close to getting my new tacoma and want to sell my current truck to put towards it but not real sure what I could actually get for it as opposed to what I see listed. It’s a 2006 Ford F-250 4x4 super duty xlt diesel in great condition with only 46k miles on it. I see them listed anywhere from $13k to $28k depending on miles. Any idea what real world value would be?

Depends on a variety of factors - quality, location, demand, are a few. Some pics to help us see would be helpful too. Have you checked value on KBB or another one of those evaluator sites?

Go to CarMax and see what they'll pay. It will be close to trade in value (actual, not what a dealer tells you)

Average the Private Party numbers and retail numbers. Pick a number in between those two, so a prospect sees it's less than retail. And you have room to come down to Private Party if you have to.

Always start a touch high (but realistic). You can come down, but you can't go up.

Have it sparkling clean when folks start to come look at it.

I have, it ranges from $19k-$25k. Above good condition and just below excellent. Services all updated through ford, located in San Diego. I’ll snap some pics when I get a chance.

Has some rust spots on the shocks (original shock setup) and the usual but nothing that has eaten through anything.

Crew cab? Dual rear wheels? You have somewhat of a rare truck due to the fact that it’s very low miles for the year which could be somewhat desirable.

Crew cab 4 door/white. Not a chalky, new all terrains on it with about 2k miles on them. She’s a peach for sure and that’s why I am trying to get real world ideas here.

People love older diesels around here, less emissions equipment. With that said I think your truck has the 6.0 diesel. This motor is less desirable.

What an odd question. You already know the range. Sell it for what youwant...if no one buys it, lower the price....

A quick search suggests around $17k, wholesale. Private party could obviously be more but really, it’s only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Like the poster above mentioned, the 6.0 is not as desirable, however low miles like yours helps ALOT

People go crazy over no emission diesels here in my state. My buddy bought a 2006.5 duramax about 7-8 years ago. He has been offered thousands more than what he paid for it just recently. It has high miles and hours on it now. He farms and uses it 20+hrs a day for farming. Granted, that’s a sought after year for the duramax, but farmers/ranchers go nuts for them. Not sure what the market is like in your area, but I’d shoot for the very high end.

Actually the 2005-2007 have become desirable because Ford made a lot of upgrades to those years and ironed out a lot of problems in them. Bill Hewit in Atlanta specializes in these trucks and he can get 300,000 miles out of them no problem. Some are getting higher miles than that. The 6.4 is the REAL time bomb.

That is not true. Those years were the most problematic. I wouldn’t call fixes upgrades and any engine can run 300k as long as you are willing to fix it

2003-2004.5 were the major trouble years for those engines. They made several upgrades to the head studs to solve the head gasket leak problem. The secret to those engines is to not run race tunes, use Ford filters and gaskets and oil and you have to maintain them. Delete the egr, upgrade the head studs and radiator and those engines are every bit as reliable as a 7.3. The problem is you used to could get em cheap and they were the best kept secret out there. Now more people are looking for the later years because they're the last diesel before you got into the DPF and DEF crap.

As others have said, you have the 6.0psd, prices are all over the place because if you have one with no engine modifications, or one with bad modifications it’s close to worthless. If you have one with specific engine mods and decent maintenance records, it’s worth a decent amount. People buying 6.0psd usually know exactly what to look for, because there is so much bad press on them, your average buyer will walk away due to all the bad press, and your knowledgeable buyer will know exactly what to look for as he knows the potential time bomb if particular changes have not been done.
But it’s super hard to value it without knowing what’s has or hasn’t been done to it.

I’m aware of the 6.0 issues. The truck was my fathers who drove a semi for a living and was a diesel mechanic. He passed 7 years ago and I have had it since. I do remember he had it gone through and had ford change some things but not sure what. It’s all in the service records. Things I remember him doing were something with the chip and he did a gas tank mod so now it will fill up with an extra 4-5 gallons. He always talked about the 6.0 issues and waited for this truck because of that in the 04-05 models. The only problem I have had in 7 years was the turbo rubber hose cracked and was recently replaced.
