I’m thinking about trading in my 2018 dcsb auto for an access cab long bed with a stick.

I’ve never traded in because I heard you get hosed. That being said I hate selling vehicles on Craigslist because everyone is broke.

So how can I make this process painless and simple? Does a Toyota dealer typically offer more for a Toyota?

A Toyota dealer will offer you more because they cannot use the excuse it’s not their brand. It’s a laughable sales tactic but they work every angle so at least that one is removed. Also, because you are staying brand and model loyal, it’s more difficult for them to hose you on the price because if they low ball you on trade, your point of view becomes “You’re going to charge me X on this new one when you know it will be worthless in 2 years” So you’ve removed that angle because it truly is a relative negotiation. Of course they’re going to tell you how market isn’t as good on the one you’re trading in compared to the one you want, just raise your eyebrow and call BS on that one.

If you have a local dealer that has the truck you want on their lot, give it a run, they are always hungry to sell their inventory. Exercise the numbers, if you like them, jump. If it comes down to a couple grand that you just won’t do, tell them you’ll sell it privately and after you do, you may be in touch. Your phone will ring not long after.

In theory, you will always do better selling it yourself but like you said, everyone is broke and wants to bid it down. You have to weed out the BS, scams, tire kickers, etc. and if you have a lien on the truck, that scares people too even though that’s an easy thing to handle. With that said, everything is worth it’s price, so is it worth squeezing that last “possible” $2-3k out of your truck? Only you can answer that.

Don't forget the sales tax savings trading in vs. selling outright.

I gave thought to selling my 18 Tacoma, but losing the ass-ache of having to dealing with people and the sales tax savings won out. So I traded it in. At least I knew what the dance was trading it in vs. dealing with the countless flakes, deadbeats, tire kickers and broke people

This would be a killer argument, but my state doesn’t do that whole sales tax thing. Huge bummer

Will this be a new truck? When I got mine (2019) new, I discovered that 4x4 + Access Cab = special order, 3 months. 2x4 Access Cab is easy, as is 4x4 double cab. Be psyched to be patient.

Do your research know what your trade in value is worth and what the truck sells for .compare prices from other dealers to see what the same truck you want to purchase are listed at and sell for . Car guru is a good site to see those numbers .Don’t make the mistake by taking the first offer they give you .don’t be afraid to walk out guarantee if they want your business they will drop the price to a deal that you are comfortable with . I went to the same dealer 3 times before I bought my truck and got the numbers I liked .

Does the Dealer have the TRD Sport Access Cab you want in stock currently or is it going to be something you have to wait for?

Dealer is not going to give you very much. Lots of data showing wholesale market prices are very low and dealers are capitalizing on this and the low inventories.

if you sell it for a fair price it will sell quickly probably. I just sold our 2009 TRD Sport with 196k miles on it in less than 12 hours for $12,500 on Craigslist

The reason I asked if they already have the Sport Access Cab in stock is because sometimes it can take months to get a MT Tacoma, so you would have to make arrangements to cover transportation for the wait time if you sell it outright now.

Um, research first. Try kelly blue book. Get a value you like.
Then, take it to dealer and tell them you want to trade for difference. That way, it's up to them to figure it out. Good luck I have used this method for 40 years.

They do not, I can find one I think but it’s not exactly what I want. Figure 2-3 months we may see 2022 Tacoma’s, and then we’ll... the 2022 tundra will be knocking on my door too.

Pipe dreams really, more I think about visiting a dealer again makes me just want to keep what I have. Lol

Think this is the way. It seemed like a fun idea, but I checked the backseat out on this thing and I’m pretty disappointed (or more so my dog will be disappointed)
