Lol! That's 54°F warmer than it was that morning. :) it's currently a brisk 5°F where I am. It's probably even colder up north.

Lol, the only thing that warms up sitting still is the engine, cooling circuit and interior. All those other parts, like power steering, brakes, transmission, differentials, transfer case, axles, wheel bearings, tires, shocks, etc stay cold until you drive it.

My '03 4runner and '19 4runners both did/do this. Yesterday was the first time I've heard that sound since 2019.

I usually give the motor a minute or 2, then drive like a granny for 5-10 minutes depending on how cold it is.

    Check build thread!
My truck saw I think -25c last night? Lowest in any vehicle was -45c with my dad's old 6.0 Powerstroke as a kid. Sounded like a jet engine after it started lol.

I got the noise this morning in the taco. Sounded like something that spins was without lube for a moment. It lasted less than a second. I’m not worried about it being internal because there’s always a thin layer of oil left on surfaces after the pump shuts down . . . . it never fully drains back into the pan, there’s always *some clinging to engine components.

Guys up in Alaska and Canadia:
With those kinds of temps (-50F) I wonder if your engines run on port injection for longer, or if they switch over to direct injection after brief warm-up like ours do down in CONUS

I've always wondered where the outside temp probe is on vehicles, doesn't seem like engine temp affects the reading ? I've rode snowmobiles in -35 f and loved every mile...

Environmental temp sensor is normally located in the front bumper or in the rain tray. In the Tacoma it's in the front behind the grill.

Some forecasts say -50C where I am in the Yukon, Canada tonight. I just acquired my Tacoma over the weekend and it doesn't have a temp gauge in it, but I can tell you it was -43C by most reports this am. It was a bit sluggish in the transmission and steering for a bit but it started well enough being plugged in.

Makes me sick all the folks here complaining about -5F :)

That is partially incorrect my dear sir. Somewhere on the forum in a similar thread you can find the actual photographic evidence of my block, oil and battery heaters warming the transmission as well. After the engine was started the transmission continued to increase in temperature. The power steering is warmed up quite a bit by letting the engine idle for a few minutes at least. In my old beater Range Rover it was very difficult and sounded terrible if you turned the wheel without letting the engine bay heat warm the power steering as well.

Nothing less than 16F in the Tacoma, thankfully. Coldest I've had a vehicle was -10F in my CJ7...had to put cardboard in front of the radiator to help the engine warm up. I used to design test facilities that simulated -40F/C for car manufacturers. Funny when new cars won't even turn over when its that cold.

Is that not an anachronism? I remember them debunking that on the NPR show Car Talk.

It’s been a warm winter here up until this week and I also park my car in a heated garage, but I parked it outside the other day and it was -11F when I started it. It made a belt screeching noise for a fraction of second and the clutch felt like molasses as per normal. I took it out and had some fun in the snow. It’s a trooper in the cold.

I was watching a show just the other day where I group took the road up to Prudhoe Bay. Crazy looking place. It sometimes amazes me there is civilization north of the Minnesota-Canadian border. It’s seems so remote even there. I’m speaking specifically of the boundary waters canoe area wilderness.

Was 17°F this morning. That might be the coldest morning so far since I had the truck. If not very close.
It's one of them mornings were with my old diesel if the thing wasn't plugged in to the block heater with timer it possibly would be a bad morning with a delay. One thing I don't miss.
