    Bunch of different mods
    Square tires.

Only northerners will know what that means - so cold, that pressure dropped in the tires. If the vehicle sat in the cold long enough, the flattened bottoms retain that shape for a first bit of the drive. Driving on them feels like you are driving on square tires.

*** seems a lot less noticable on quality modern winter tires

Good call on the incognito window. However, I still disagree completely dependent on what is considered winter. Below -20*F letting the engine idle to warm up on modern cars is much better than just driving off. At those temperatures it is difficult to turn the wheel or shift into gear until fluids are warmed by the running engine. With my Tacoma I had several oil analysis done and none showed any increase in fuel dilution or wear metals that would be present if the common claims of added wear were true.

Ya the truck is stiff when it’s cold. I don’t see that as a safety issue. Are you old enough to have driven a car without power steering? Also the best way to warm up all that stuff is to use it, yes?

The wear and tear the article is referring to is the wear and tear experienced while the engine is idling instead of doing useful work.

Read the article. It will make more sense.

-40`C (-40`F) tonight, last year brought us down to -50`C (-58`F) for 3 full weeks. Started idling pretty rough, surges in RPMs while I sat at intersections. Once it warmed up it was fine. Spoke to a red seal tech and he said it was probably ice on the fuel injectors.

It's been -0F for a few days now for lows, yesterday was -23F. My Tacoma hasn't been started since last Friday. It's parked in an unheated garage, so we'll see how it starts this Friday when the temp is supposed to be -6F for a high. I expect the battery is going to hate life.

I might take sympathy and put the battery tender on it today after running it

idk about ice on the fuel injectors. I would think IF that is a real phenomena it would be melted about 15 seconds after startup. But our engines have both port and direct injection, so maybe only the port injectors were freezing up/ clogging?

maybe someone with more knowledge on when and how the switch from port to direct occurs can chime in

Mine stays parked for days too, but it’s on an 8 degree incline, nose in the air. Sometimes I wonder if that’s a bad thing, i.e. the oil collects at the back of the pan and the pump can’t move enough of it. I wouldn’t think 8 degrees is enough to make a difference but it isn’t as tho these trucks have a dry sump system either

The lowest I remember ever seeing is -22 at Sugarloaf, Maine. It started fine though.

He read some study that suggested if people stopped letting their vehicles idle for a couple minutes it would stop 1.6% of carbon emissions every year. That’s what this is about.

Someone once said “-40 Fahrenheit or Celsius?”

The reply was “Does it really matter?”

-40ºF (which happens to be -40ºC) in Chicago. And no, I didn't attempt to start my truck that day. Glad I moved back to the south. The midwest and Canada can keep their winters to themselves.

Ya the article mentions that idling the car comfort is legitimate, but it says that idling it for engine wear is not warranted.

I’m sure there is a limit to this theory because at some point the oil will freeze solid. :)

I like a good Canadian winter. The real possibility of a quick death from exposure builds character in my opinion.
