i drive a 2.7 auto and i noticed i get much better mpg if I keep the revs up high. doesn't make much sense but it's a massive difference. maybe it's the gearing. just idling around and keeping the revs below 2k i see about 16 mpg. if keep it between 2 and 4 k I will see around 17.5 mpg. i think these engines like to be revved up high. also, anything less than 91 octane seems like it's handicapping the 2.7. i fill up with 91 now.

I have a webapp that I wrote to track all of my finances and auto stuff. My last ten fill-ups:

    Last_ten_fillups.jpg

16.9 mpg unadjusted. Stock tires are 30.6" in diameter, I'm running 235/85/16 @ ~40psi, so 31.7". Adjusted MPG is 17.5 if my math is correct.

Iam not mechanically inclined enough to do gears but fortunately I found a local shop that installed brand new 4.56 NITRO gears for just over $1500. those gears cost about that alone. They’re out there, you just have to dig.

I drive a 2000 extra cab, v6, 4.10s with 203,000 on the clock. Close to what you got. Had it for a year now and have seen anywhere from 22 right after I got it, with a flush to cab canopy, driving to and from work 20 miles a day doing 55MPH , empty bed, 31" ATs. To 16MPG loaded up, using some 4WD or doing 70+. In the last 6 months I have mostly kept a drawer system in it that weighs about 100 lbs, and added a 29" canopy to the bed, often with a box on top. A few weeks back I got 19, somehow I don't know, but my average is around 17. 16 or less if I use 4WD for a significant chunk. I'd say your 16.5 is fine for a 20 year old trooper, but hey if you find a secret to bump it up...let me know!!

So I didn’t even think about the fact that my speedometer is a little off and that that might effect odometer . I am in the middle of converting my truck to 4wd and I’m pretty sure I choose the wrong speed sensor gear because when I pass radar signs my speedometer is always lower than what the radar says. Usually about 5-7 mph off. Not that it matters much, I’m not super concerned about mpg except for making sure something isn’t wrong.

2000 Tacoma SR5 V6 XC Manual with locking hubs and a topper,31/10.5/15's Bought it new in September of 00. Sitting at 165,000 miles or so now.
In the winter, hubs locked towing 2 sled snowmobile trailer with gear, from 9000' foot, town level up to top of Vail Pass CO elevation 11,100' I average just under 11 MPG per tank full at 70 mph. Pedal to the floor uphill, basically coast downhill.
Summer towing out to the lake 7850' with 2 light weight jetski's, trailer and extra gas cans at 60 I can get 20 MPG per tank.
Drive it hard it sucks down the Go/Go juice, especially with winter blend gas. We have a 30+ mpg Accord for when we're looking for good fuel economy.

:thumbsup:16.45 MPG last trip from El Paso to Dallas Tx , considering 30% more gas consumption for every 10mph over 55mph. the calculation based on driving a little over 80mph. I think it should perform as supposed to 16city 19 hwy depending on your Heavy foot accelerating 0 to 40 and proper care as all other mentioned before. Tires 245/75/16 ... 35 psi

Winter has in Colorado absolutely sucks. Unless you’re able to buy ethanol free in GJ. But down here in the Front Range it’s impossible to find. And lessens the mpg by 2-3 mpg.

I get about 14-17, of course my Speedo is off by about 3-4 mph. Gearing is 3.91, with 31.7” tires. Looking to re-gear next spring before heading up North, see what it is after that trip. The AlCan trip always sucks mileage wise, lots of long grades and frost heaves keeps you from keeping a consistent speed.

the 3rz is definitely a rev happy engine. It lugs pretty bad when at lower RPM's so you have to keep it at or above 3k for any use of the powerband. doesn't help to have big heavy tires either though
Never filled mine with 91, i'll have to give it a try and see if I notice a difference.

I just checked my 03 DC 3.4l automatic transmission gas milage when I just filled up. Mostly just running around doing errands with some highway miles, I averaged 17.4. I usually get 21 on the highway when I keep my rpm's around 2250 on cruise control running 70 mph.

This. The winter gas here is terrible and ethanol free is definitely not easy to come by.

I avg 19 in the summer with stock 31x10.5 and my un-aerodynamic roof basket and heavy ass camping setup and shell in the bed. Goes down to like 16 in the winter, could also be from warming the truck up the morning :notsure:

Filled the 00 up with ethanol free 87 octane last tank. 41 cents a gallon more than regular unleaded(same price as e10 super unleaded). It's available at a station 2 miles from my house in GJ. Usually use it in my mower and jet ski's(things that don't get a lot of use). 00 hadn't been driven in months so I filled it with ethanol free, It ran great ,but not worth the difference in price per gallon for everyday use.
