I drive a 17 TRDOR with a bunch of add-ons, ARE shell, icon suspension, sliders, bumper etc. I have progressive insurance and they have an option for coverage on add on parts. Just curious what other people’s experince is with this add on coverage if in an accident. What is covered by the add on coverage and what isn’t or is covered by the policy. Is new suspension bumpers etc covered by the compressive policy or only if you have the add on? When I got my shell progressive said I’d need to do extra coverage for the shell but were vague on suspension bumpers etc.

    What’s your experience?

My State Farm rep said if I could show a receipt for any mods then I’d be reimbursed

I guess I’d have to check the fine print to confirm

I called my insurance for this specific reason. They said that the coverage for any add-on's or mods was an additional $15/month and I will be reimbursed in case of an accident as long as I can show a receipt of said modification. Even it it's used gear, my agent said a paypal receipt is acceptable. I went with the coverage, of course. The coverage does include my suspension, bumpers, radio, etc....

I've always just took a chance with add ons. Insurance companies are tight and never want to pay out anyway.

If said add on were valuable to you, or has high costs, just hold onto receipts.

Mine is included in the base rate, just have to notify adjuster of said aftermarket parts and provide receipts etc if not verified and confirmed by visual or photo inspection and estimate of repair with the same parts IE Pro Grill on non pro model. Same goes for routine maintenance and total loss evaluation they will consider major maintenance like brakes engine transmission etc when calculating ACV for total loss. Source Me, my own agent and person who handles claims in the agency.

I keep a file at home with printouts of all my receipts.

So do insurance companies potentially need to be notified of simple mods like aftermarket wheels and adding an OEM roof rack?

I've never had an Insurance claim issue, nor have I told them of any ad-ons.

Funny (true) story. When my CRV was written off in an accident, I asked If I could remove my personal items before it was towed away from the body shop. I removed my complete after-market stereo system, side Sports bars, winter tires & rims (threw on some cheap ones), rear spoiler, a fairly new battery.

Ended up selling those items for $900.

I also held out for a 2nd amount for my CRV, as I didn't like what they offered me, and got more money.

Not unless a loss happens or you have specific language in you policy contract that excludes additional equipment or modifications then yes you would want to talk to them about an endorsement to add coverage such as the progressive one listed above.

If they're attached to your truck your home/renters/condo policy aint gonna cover them either. Time to start shopping.

My full coverage insurance covered damage to my cap when I was sideswiped by a moose.

When purchasing my cap (way back in 2011) I contacted my State Farm agent to ask about coverage. He told me nothing needed to be done as it's covered under my policy.

That insurance questions are best asked of and answered by your agent, with them pointing them out to you in your written policy.

There are way too many variables to get answers *you* can rely on for *your* policy from a forum.

Im not looking for advice on my policy. It’s just a general question. I’m mostly interested in hearing what people’s experience has been if they’ve been in an accident. Did their insurance company cover the add ons and if so what add ons did they cover and which ones did they not.

Every insurance in every state is different man, that's what Bill is telling you. Some cover stuff no extra, some mods you have to pay extra, some mods covered up to a certain amount and some won't cover it on their auto policy. They are all different.

This. Where I am, insurance (seems all of them) only covers up to X amount for accessories/ mods. One vehicle I own is highly modified to the extent it’s actual resale value is about 4 times that of the base vehicle. I have to insure that at a fixed value. When I originally asked the agent about it, he said no problem just submit receipts, when I told him the actual value he changed his tune. Most agents are not “car guys”, so they are probably thinking $1k in audio equipment if you talk about modifications, be specific about the intended value and you may get a different response over the usual “just submit recipes, it’s all good, it’s all covered” BS just to get you off the phone.

I'm in the Underwriting Department of an insurance company. Take this information however you will.

First, read your policy. It's a contract outlining what will be paid. Not all policies are created equal.

Most insurance policies cover your vehicle for what it's worth minus a deductible. What it's worth is what it would sell for, not what you've invested in it to make it your own.

A classic example is a low rider hoopty. If you spend $500 on a car and another $10,000 putting spinners, pink paint, and a sound system in it you don't end up with a car worth $10,500. Your car is worth $500 or maybe even less because who would want to buy it?

The same logic holds for Tacomas.

Ask your agent about a specific endorsement for modifications. If you go really crazy with the mods, look for a stated value policy.
