I have a friend who has only owned tacomas his whole life, with that said he’s in a bit of a dilemma. My buddy currently owns an 08 Tacoma sr5 double cab, that he bought new and currently has 67000 miles on it. He is meticulous with his truck and is probably the most maintained Tacoma I have ever seen… changing directions he just had his 2023 trd pro delivered and he loves it and all it’s features and is pumped about it.
Which brings me to my dilemma that I wanna help him out with he has cerebral palsy and use crutches to walk with he called me up and said the truck is taller and he struggles to get in compared to his 08. I searched the thread and from what I’m finding nobody has lowered a 4 wheel drive yet, which why would you right, but in his case I understand. I’ve obviously searched around and found kits claiming 3” of lowering and stating for 2wd and 4wd. I don’t mind being the first but my knowledge is in the other direction of reputable company’s for lifting and I’m hoping you guys can put me into the correct company.
Thanks for any help or recommendations

He could swap out the suspension for a lower trim level, it will lower it a bit ~1" but the newer tacomas sit higher in general.

I'd suggest checking out all the choices for side steps and see which works best.

Exfordman that is an option but our harsh wyoming winters not always an option cause the damn things freeze up around here.

Okay I guess I need to re iterate here yes I have searched. The thread you listed last response was a year ago and honestly doesn’t answer my question on if the kits really will work on 4wd. And yes he knows he bought a lifted truck but he bought it for what it is and knowing I could make it work for his needs. Installing the lowering kit is not a problem at all it just seems to cheap to be true for a 4wd vehicle to be lowered

We need to know how low he wants it

Also he bought it "for what it is, knowing I could make it work for him".... but here you are, not knowing how to make it work for him.

Lowering 4wd pickups is very common especially in northern states.Rob measurements from his truck and see where it needs to sit. Drop the rear an inch maybe or get some softer coils from eibach

Swap the OR suspension for the Pro and drop a tire size which will probably be about 2" and better than a lowering kit. You could swap with someone on here and money in your pocket and pay for new tires. In other words zero net cost and 2 happy people.

My 87 year old mother had no problems getting into my lifted F150 by stepping on the nerf bar even after having both hips replaced. If your friend can get in an 08 truck he can get in the 23 with steps, running boards or something similar. This doesn't have to be complicated.

There's a lot of overthinking here.

A late model PRO isn't that much taller than an 08 SR5. Just find one of the many aftermarket running boards that has a lower step height. If he wants to go fancy there's absolutely nothing wrong with the motorized ones; which is what I'd rather go with to not cut into the ground clearance.

Lowering a PRO makes no sense.

Well I guess I anticipated the same positivity in the 3rd generation threads as the 2nd generation threads

WOW was I wrong, probably my fault for asking a question that I didn’t have adequate information I felt I was looking for

I appreciate those that have given some positive feed back and yes my fault for not stating hed like to go around 3 inches lower due to him being handicapped, yes did he need the pro absolutely not did he want it obviously and did he buy yes. So now I have been asked to help due to the vehicles I have built and the things I have accomplished. I have never lowered a Toyota and was asking for opinions on that.

Guess im wrong which is fine because im more than capable of calling the manufacturers of these lowering kits and discussing it with them, I just figured with how helpful the 2nd gen owners are 3rd gen owners where the same.

You guys clearly aren’t grasping the fact that I am friends with someone who is handicapped by cerebral palsey and uses hand controls but does not let him dictate his choice in buying a bad ass vehicle. Is it not the best choice to lower a trd pro financial absolutely not but at the end of the is anything we do to our vehicles outside of keeping it stock?

@LeakyAC Im asking opinions of the kits that are available and if they truly are 4wd/2wd compatible but thanks I get it shouldn’t have asked on here, and yeah he is handicapped with cerebral palsy and uses hand controls and bought probably way more truck than he needs but im not one to judge some one in there choices im only gonna lower it

@Marshall R that’s wonderful your mother had successful recovery thanks for the information ill make sure I tell my friend hes a bitch for being born with cerebral palsy and he should man up

@Jesse H we live in Wyoming and I see constant problems for nearly 5 months out of the year where they freeze up, I had already stated that. yeah lowering a pro doesn’t make sense but that wasn’t my question im asking if the kits are compatible or not

Glad I could come here and be discouraged on asking a question when really theres not much on this forum for lowering a 4wd 3rd gen

    thanks
