My average fuel economy in my Gen 3 is 23 mpg. That's mixed driving. On the freeway, I'm usually about 70-75 and I'll get around 26 mpg. I have no idea how you were able to get the mpg so low. I couldn't if I tried.

Its getting bad, Im almost broke.
Its quite simple, you live in a different part of the county at a different altitude. I live where the roads are never flat. Its either uphill or down here.

lol there's so many of these threads they're pretty comical
did you not test drive it before you bought it?

I'm now considering it since with all the weight I'm adding with armour and tires it might help offset the power loss a tiny bit.

at least help with throttle response

I'm not saying you don't get that, but I don't believe you get that. I don't ever break 20 for a tank unless I'm driving like a bitch on the highway towards the beach (down hill)...and even then I'll get 21. The rest of the time it's 17-18.

I get 18-19 around town. 22-23 easy on interstate. Yeah I calculate it correctly. Yeah it's stock. Overall after the first 12K miles I am averaging 21 mpg. I drive it regular, not like a grandpa and not like "Jimmy was a racecar driver." #primusreference #fiftyfiveandstillrockin

you guys are lucky, i cant seem to break 16mpg regardless of how i drive, and i tried changing it up every way imaginable. i put 3k miles on the truck in 1 month, not very happy with the fact that my 15mpg average is costing me 600$ a month in fuel.

The trade in value will only go down as you put more miles on it. If you are disappointed with the truck why not just trade it in now and cut your losses? You will lose some money in the process but at least you can get a vehicle that better suits your needs/wants.

I got 25 for a brief few miles with the wind pushing me down the mountains on I70 headed East from Breck. I average 18 mixed driving in KS. on summer blends.

I understand the on board computer is a little optimistic, but I've crunched numbers myself and they have been about the same. I don't know, maybe it's my driving style? My current average is 23.5 MPG, I haven't reset the meter in months. If I go tank by tank, I'm getting the same during warm months and it dips to about 21 MPG in the dead of winter.

For what it's worth, I was getting 20 MPG mixed in the summer and 19 MPG mixed in the winter in my 2010 4Runner, so it might just be the way I drive.

I am seeing that 1 mile per gallon benefit with the topper on, crazy but it is real.

Its a forum and a good place to vent if your not satisfied with something, I get that.

I love my truck and it is super versatile, never had a truck before, had plenty of Toytoa 4x4s now. This is my 5th.

I typically get 17mpg sitting in traffic on a 7 mile commute home. But two days ago I drove 10 miles mixed and got 25.2. Best I've ever done, I was so stoked. One thing I've noticed is even if I only get on the gas and accelerate hard ONE TIME during a trip it can drop my mileage a couple points. The motor can really chug gas when you get on it. All this is on a 4WD DCLB btw.

Off-topic, unrelated to the gas mileage, that looks really nice! Never thought I'd want a topper on the back of my truck, but after seeing a few on the forums, it will be my first purchase.

Appears the OP finally did the same thing.

Maybe op should have tried towing instead of posting about it.
3rd tows faster up same grade than my 2nd did because of 18 % more hp. That is a big differnce. Never would go back to 2nd gen. Couldn’t stand the outdated look either especially on the interior. And frame.
I tow 5k with ease flat terrain. Love it. Zero issues other than a battery in 2 years.
Dont know what people want from a midsize ?

they want V8 power with Econo car gas mileage, most have unrealistic expectations because they do not research the truck or thoroughly test drive before they buy it and only buy it because it makes them look cool, not out of need or necessity and then they post up threads about their disappointment with the Tacoma because their lack of due diligence before buying.

Like I tell everyone, you should have purchased a manual.
Not sure why you didn't, you seem to have had plenty in the past.

averaging of 21mpgs for a mid size 4x4 v6 truck is very good MPGs for its class IMO you cant get any better MPGs like that from the competitive truck market for a mid size.

Pretty late to this, but comparing the size and weight of the 1st to 3rd gen, I'm not surprised.
