I traded in our 2015 4 runner for a 19' Tacoma. We have always taken our 4 runner to run the Alpine Loop and other trails in Colorado and it has done fine. This year with the Tacoma (3.5) we almost came to stop on one of the hills without any of our gear in the truck. It was in 1st with no slipping, I had it to the floor and I thought we were going to have to back down. We eventually crawled up the rest of the way. I guess I was a bit disappointed. The Tacoma has a bit more HP, I have not compared the gearing, but should there be that drastic of a difference in power?

This does not add up. 1st and floored has plenty of torque to break the wheels loose. what else was going on when this happened? Taken this truck up plenty of steep hills with no issues

With new KO2s it will not break loose on the dirt. Nothing else was going on that was out of the ordinary. We were on the last leg of the switchbacks and it just kept slowing down and slowing down. The gearing from the factory seems to be lacking. Thinking that may be my next option.

Makes zero sense. These trucks have all the torque you need offroad. Look at some of the threads here on rock crawling. If it did what you imply then it couldn't even climb a rock.
My guess is you had it in 4HI and tight turn, or, more likely it started to slip and VSC kicked on and retarded the throttle. Turn off all the nannies when offroad. The instructions are in that strange flat rectangle thing with lots of pages in the glovebox.

Something seems off... I am in NH, so low elevations wise, but I have "crawled" over some steep shit and the truck always impresses me in what it can do stock with KO-bros...

2 variations of the same question, never answered. In fact there's no mention of even being in 4wd........

So OP, what were you running at the time? Asking, just like these smarter than me guys did since there are multiple options and multiple results to be had.

And we're sure of this because??? I mean there's no light on the dash that says 'I'm limping' is there?

Owning both a 3rd gen TRD OR and 5th gen T4R OR...the difference in torque between the 3.5 and 4.0 are negligible when in 4lo. If you were in Colorado like you say, running trails and switch backs like you say...you should have been in 4lo.

If you werent id try that next time.

Trying to discredit ability when you have no knowledge of operating systems usually dont go over real well around here.

4lo and traction control off should make easy work of the situation you described

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
PEBSWAS - Problem Exists between Steering Wheel And Seat. Turn off the nannies, use the right gear, and go. I've been up sand dunes so steep the inclinometer is buried in red and had no issues. Stock gears, stock tune, KO2s. Been on plenty of tough trails and never had issues, even on those where locking was the only way up the off-camber rutted steep hills. Turn off the nannies (go look for the sticky thread explaining the various nanny modes and when to turn each off), choose the right gearing, and send it.
