Not trying to be dramatic but I'm seriously considering getting out of this truck into a Tundra or 4Runner or something that drives a bit....better? Smoother? You guys know what i'm talking about.

In a 5-year deal but if the shifting issues cannot be addressed I am considering jumping ship. How would I go about this? How much can I expect to lose?

Has anyone done this before? If so I'd like to know how everything played out.

I can't help you much with getting out. IF you find yourself stuck I can say my shifting improve noticeably once my transmission fluid was topped off the the proper level. Hopefully someone can help you with your actual question

A dealer will quite willingly let you out of a lease if you let them give you a bath on a new one--you will lose money...

Yeah, I'm expecting to lose some. This isn't an ideal situation after all but man...do you think going to a different dealer (or make?) would help some?

Apparently my dealer has a waiting list for used Tacos...not sure if I can use that as leverage...

Have you tried driving around in ECT mode for a while? I had similar issues wrapping my head around how the truck shifts....using ECT helped me understand it's a programming/computer controlled characteristic of the truck.

Have you spoken to them yet? That is the place to start--not here. IN a forum like this all you will find out is that Harry Callahan was spot on...

Tried it but it felt like I want driving a space rocket around. Too much jerking around. I feel like I made a huge mistake. I am trying to get used to it but it's been a month and honestly these days driving feels like a chore...and it shouldn't when you got yourself your first new truck.

Trying to cut my losses, wanted to know the real story and not some more lies my dealership would feed me if I told them I want a more expensive Tundra.

What was your previous vehicle? I came from a Jetta and the adjustment took me a few months

Ide recommend the OV TUNE. It will address your issue and then some. Price is high but for peace pf mind it may be an alternative for you

2004 Accord. I never had issues with that thing in the 6 years I owned it. Wasn't a perfect car but it drove smoothly. I even had a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix with a failing transmission that shifted smoother than this Taco. I was about to get a Frontier Pro 4X for less than this SR5 but I trusted the brand and Tacoma name blindly and got burned. That is 100% on me for not doing research.

I'm going to try to make this lease work but sometimes I want to just move on.

I didn’t have a lease since I purchased, but I traded my 16 month old taco in on my 4runner......zero complaints. I lost very little on my trade, and the little I did lose was worth it.

The only problem is the 4Runner and Tundra are a decent bit outside my original budget. I'd rather clunk around in this rig than succumb to a Camry though.

Totally understand. Take your time to consider what you’re going to do, in the mean time, save as much as possible in order to trade up should you decide to do so.

I Bought a 17 DCSB OR 4x4 it was made in august of 17 from what it says on the label, I do experience this down shifting on the highway but wouldnt it be fixed with the ECT Button and possible putting it into S mode so you can someone control the gearing? On my Girlfriend's Veloster I usually drive it in S mode on the highway and I jumped from getting 25 to 30 Mpgs (Different car i know) I didnt buy this truk to be economical but these problems seem to be easily worked around. I'm no expert but that crosses my mind as a work around of the weird shifting progblem.

and if you are in a lease wouldnt the dealer be able to check fluid levels and you bring them out to show them this hard shifting? Were you one of the people affected by that differential "recall"?

p.s. My Dad has a 16 SR5 4Runner, Really do test drive one before you make a choice that thing feels sluggish until about 3k rpm and by that time your already doing 15mpg.

Again i'm no expert feel free to correct me if i'm wrong just don't crucify me...

Give your trans time to learn your driving style, like the manual says, then if it still sucks put the shift sense pro in, I might do that. Got less than a thousand miles on mine and I don't like it either, but I can't afford to trade it, I like the truck anyway. I'm getting old so I'll just Give Peace a Chance!

I don't hate the truck! I get tons of compliments on it and I love the exterior and interior design....but there's a unique feeling of being too embarrassed to confess to your fiance or family members that you hate driving it. I have to put on this half-fake smile to let everyone know I'm enjoying my new truck and to be happy for me and everything because you don't want them stressing over me stressing. Ya know?

Maybe it's a good idea to go talk to the Dealer as maybe they can make you a decent deal, can't hurt to try.

Not really, but if you hate it that much, do what you gotta do. Maybe take it to carmax and see if their offer covers you.

Everyone makes mistakes. Some people are not truck people and the Tacoma is definitely a truck. Drives like one, rides like one. Handles like one.
Make sure you really test drive the next one multiple times before leasing.

And you will lose money, either on this one or the one you trade for. How much? Probably around 10%, unless you trade for a 1794 Tundra then you won't lose much.

I don't know man my dad had a '05 Suburban and that thing was smooth as butter. I drove a brand new 2012 Express at a previous job. This isn't my first time driving a truck. My service manager told me that same thing though "it's a truck, it's a bit harsher...". I don't think these hard shifts have anything to do with being a truck though.
