There was a comment made by someone else earlier that back when Toyota put the v8 in the 4Runner and the sequoia no one bought the sequoia- they wanted power over size

    Something does bother me though….
Toyota teased a picture showing the i-force max badge- they wanted people to think they might put the twin turbo V6 in the Tacoma only to swap out to the turbo 4 at the last minute.
They wanted all of us to have these conversations only to drum up interest in the new truck-
    I call it…
    deceptive
    Underhanded
And a betrayal in the name of marketing

I think we are very subtly being manipulated…

Not necessarily. If you read up on the trademark and patent by Toyota, there is no reference to the number of cylinders.

    Trademark

Possible patent attached (assumed to be I-Force Max based on my Google-fu)

The i Force max branding seems to be consistent with the vehicle line. Toyota markets the Tundra version as the 'Tundra iForce MAX'. The Tacoma could be the 'Tacoma iForce MAX'. We shall see.

They haven't confirmed until friday so nothing shady is going on yet.

Personally I think they will surprise everyone and actually use the 6 cyl.

The fact that they are sharing the name with tbw Tundra instead of using Hybrid Max like every other High powered 4 cyl hybrid, and the Ranger Raptor using a 6 cyl...

Makes me think we will get a detuned but still powerful 6 cyl.

T24A-FTS is my guess as well. They've already replaced the 2GR-FKS in the RX 350 and Highlander with it. Has "enough" power for the platform despite everyone wishing otherwise.

If they put the tundra engine in the Tacoma they will lose a metric ton of Tundra sales… Especially if they make this gen of Tacoma with a bit more interior room, payload, etc. I just don’t see Toyota doing that these days.

I just hope they don’t shrink the interior like they did in the Tundra.

Not to derail this thread, but do you have some side shots of your rig? I also have a v8 4runner and am debating putting on some black rims. Pic for reference:

Sure thing, its nothing special just redid some 5th gen offroad takeoffs until I figure out what direction I want to go with wheel wise and finish my Tacoma Pro build.

While I would love the power, they would HAVE to put a real limited slip differential in the truck. Im already spinning a wheel constantly.

Thats a shame. Love the power and smooth delivery of the 4runner but love being able to row my own gears in my tacoma

    3 engines, all 4 cylinders.

Tacoma will offer two powerful and efficient powertrains using a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. For entry- level SR grades, this engine produces 228 horsepower and 243 lb.-ft. of torque. For all other grades, output increases to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque when paired with the new eight-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). Enthusiasts rejoice: a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT2) with automatic rev matching and anti-stall technology is available. Manual transmission models produce 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque.

New to the mid-size, body-on-frame pickup segment is Tacoma’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, the most powerful powertrain ever offered on Tacoma. Available on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and standard on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter halo models, i-FORCE MAX pairs the 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission feeding off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack that creates a total system output of 326 horsepower and a whopping 465 lb.-ft. of torque, nearly doubling the torque output of the current-gen truck with the V-6 engine. When equipped with i-FORCE MAX, Tacoma can ascend an 8- percent interstate grade without the need to downshift, making long road trips more pleasant than ever in a Tacoma. Fuel economy estimates for all powertrains will be announced closer to their on-sale dates.

Tacomas with rear-wheel drive feature an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD), and four-wheel-drive models have an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range along with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD). An electronic locking rear differential is standard on TRD PreRunner, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades. The new and luxurious Limited grade now features a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential on i- FORCE MAX models.

Well the mistery is over guys, Toyota was just playing games with their names!

Props to the guys who guessed it right!

Either way, all the new powertrains are looking great! Getting all that power even in the base trims at 1700rpms is amazing compared to the current V6.
