I think this is very likely, but I’m no Toyota executive.

I realize that, but in all honesty how many people walked into a dealership wanting to look at Tacomas and then realized it wasnt capable of what they needed then purchased a Tundra? I feel like thats probably a very small segment of the market. Granted I have no data to back that up.

I would bet $ that 2.4L turbo or other 4cyl. turbo already in production somewhere is what ends up in the Tacoma.
Toyota is going to have a min. of 2 years of new gen Tundra production before the new architecture is adapted to accommodate a Tacoma body.

In short, with the increased mid sized truck competition, if Toyota wants to maintain its sales dominance they will need to insure there are no missteps with the 4th gen Tacoma. Components already in production and on the road with other Toyota products that are smaller sales volume and thus less crucial, is the way to do it.

One can never have too many light bars.
The next Gen 4Runner was projected to be released in late 2022 for the 2023MY. Not sure if the chip shortage or other pandemic related factors changed that timeline. But whatever engine/tranny setup they come out with will 99% be the same one as the Taco.

The hp ratings would be about the same as the current model, but those torque numbers blow away the current generation. I'd take that in a heartbeat. I always felt a truck should have more torque than hp or atleast at a lower rpm, I'm not buying a sports car. That should improve the driveability by a long shot. *hopefully

While Atkinson cycle engines are efficient, they lack mid range torque when compared to similar displacement engines. Well suited to hybrid power trains but lack otherwise. Small displacement turbo engines produce tremendous amounts of mid range torque and are ideal powerplants for autos but I am surprised to see them offered in a hybrid platform due to the frequent start/stop nature of hybrids and it's effect on turbochargers.

Better than sales going to the competition.
