Truck just turned over 500 miles. This second tank all city came in at 16.9 mpg. Finally feels like it is loosening up a little.

The only thing I've seen is Toyota unveiled a concept hybrid electric truck at the Detroit Auto show recently, named A-BAT. Do a search on that, you'll see it. It's weird.

I agree. Winter gas up here in NH, 4wd in snow & slop.
I'm getting around 15-17MPG tops. I'm hoping Spring will bring better mileage. We're also panning a road trip to Tennessee, and Oklahma, so I'll have the figures to post after that.

I'd guess that your lift (reduced aerodynamics) and bigger-than-stock and probably lower pressure tires (hugely increased drag/rolling-resistance) are why your mileage is what it is.

My other car is a Prius. Because of that, I've become something of a mileage fanatic. Narrower, higher pressure tires makes a seriously significant difference. Big, knobby mud-bogging tires will cut mileage by a good 20% all by themselves. I don't mud-bog and thus tend to keep my tires aired up to the max allowed most of the time. Also, there are some driving techniques (referred to by the Prius types as "hypermiling") that can help even with non-hybrids. Most of it is just good ol' common sense, avoiding a lead foot, trying to coast up to lights rather than gunning it and slamming on the brakes, that sort of thing. Something called "pulse and glide" helps a little for non-hybrids as well although isn't as huge as with a big throbbin' battery on-board, and basically means that you bring the vehicle briskly (not lead-footed, but not gradually either) up to the desired cruising speed or a little above and then just very gently feather the pedal allowing the vehicle to cruise and slow very gradually, then repeat the process when you're going too slow for your liking. Saves gas. Get a ScanGaugeII, hook it up, and play with your driving techniques, you'll soon discover what works and what doesn't if you are interested in maximizing your mileage.

Oh, and I use the lowest octane fuel allowed by the vehicle's owners manual. Anything higher than that is a big waste of money, and there's actually less energy/BTUs in higher-octane gas, kind of counter-intuitive but true.

I hypermile with my I4 2.7L base model 5-speed manual and have been getting an average TANK mpg of 27.6 mpg. Mostly city driving.

Coasting up to lights and stop-signs...., drafting semi-trucks...., shifting between 1,800 and 2,100 rpm's...., I'm averaging well over 575 miles per full tank of gas.

Just turned 4,100 miles. It's just starting to really break-in. I can't even feel the thing idle.

Get the "do it yourself" cruise control (130 bucks+-, and 1 hr. labor) if you don't already have one and get the ScanGauge II.

Two great investments. Next addition is a Tonneau cover.

just filled 'er up today. i got 16.69MPG on this tank(highway and city mixed). it seems like i get about 15.5-17.5 here in the winter(depending on if its 4wd weather or not). During the fall i got 19.1 mpg out of a tank, but the truck had like 3000 miles then. now its got about 11K. i'll have to see what she gets over the summer months.

18.4 city driving. Truck has 1200 miles. I try to drive cool but end up nailing it 3 to 5 times a fill-up. Mostly in the morning on my way home (gravesyard shift) competing with the morning commute crowd.

That's great mileage. I'm getting right at 20-21 on my 3rd tank. I wish we had a mileage computer in the truck like my Cobalt did as you could really tell where the best shift points were on the car and the difference, in that car, it made to stay below 2k on the tach.

I don't know much about the 2nd gen V6s for that I4 just feels like it wants to rev higher. I seem to shift in the 2,500 - 3,000 range.. I'll adjust that and see how things look dropping it below or right at 2k.

It is amazing what you can squeeze out of a tank if you are just patient and consistent and not in a hurry.

You can get a mileage-computer if you want to have one, and are willing to spend about $160. It's called a ScanGaugeII and it gives a lot of data and has other functions as well. It has been a revelation to me and has totally changed the way I drive. And no, I don't work for the company, don't make any money from sales, and this is definitely not spam!

My Tacoma (4WD regular-cab 2.7liter, 5 speed, very basic) just had its first fill-up yesterday. My mileage for the first tank was 21mpg. That was a mixture of around town and some highway. I've noticed that on the highway if I keep speeds reasonable (around 65mph or less) it registers in the high 20s and even low 30s on the ScanGauge for significant periods of time, just tooling down the road. I have very limited experience with Toyota's V6, but it stands to reason that since it puts out more power, and since it is generally installed in heavier versions of the Taco, the mileage is going to be somewhat less than the 4. But I do believe that these trucks are capable of better mileage than one might think, and I'm going to be testing it out in the months ahead, including on a trip out to Minneapolis and back (about 2800 miles, round-trip) to visit my son in June.

Two other things to consider. Increase the tire pressure, but not excessively. I put 35/35 in mine where the manual says 29/29. Prius owners have discovered that tires types and tire pressure make a big difference to mileage. Aggressive, knobby tires are going to use more gas, because of more rolling resistance.

One thing I've not yet tested, but I know that others have and the results are less dramatic, is synthetic oil. There are claims that it is more "slippery" or some such, and improves mileage. Anyone here have any thoughts on that one?
