My wife surprised me with tickets to see Oscar Peterson at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle, 2003.
She bought tickets online and booked dinner for the night. Right in the sweet spot, center-center on the floor.

I just returned from Afghanistan, we were in a new (small) house, we didn't have very nice clothes, but enough to follow the dress code as best we could.

The seating hostess was dismissive, openly rude, and found out someone had double-booked the table.
The maitre d instructed to seat us anyway, our booking date was well before the last-minute party. then he left.

we were halfway through our salad and a party of six shows up with the smug seating hostess.
my wife and I were standing there in the middle of the crowded upscale dining room, with our food and drinks in our arms, looking for all the world to be homeless by comparison.

I was about to set my food on the floor and lead her to the door. I was fuming. She was embarrassed.

I don;t know when the maitre d saw the problem. I just know when he politely led us to follow two waiters, that swept a small table to the edge of the stage. the maitre d seated us personally, at the foot of the piano.

Mister Peterson was led to his piano bench in a wheelchair. He had a recent stroke which impaired his left hand and found walking difficult. I had no idea he was mortal, much less hurt
I couldn't see him unless I turned all the way around, I was that close. after he warmed up and I just listened, I couldn't tell he was 78.

my wife and I switched seats mid-set so we could both see the quartet. Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson (and one of Mr Peterson's long-time friends) on the standup bass, Ulf Wakenius on the guitar, and Martin Drew on the drums. Without any signal I could discern, room and time were lent to each player. Peterson moved back from the piano and clapped along to Drew, eyes closed prayer-like and nodding along to Niels' walking rhythms, and lots of encouraging smiling when the young Ulf strolled through a gorgeous solo.

and again, without any cue they all returned to whatever center they understood and it was a quartet again. like cosmic tumblers all falling into place, it was natural and seamless

during the ovation my wife was the only person he shook hands with before returning to his wheelchair.
I don't share this story with many people, and you folks are near-strangers on the internet, but you love music. I figured you'd understand.

Oscar Peterson continued to perform until 2006, he would succumb to kidney failure a year later at his home near Toronto.
The town Oscar Peterson called home in his last days has a street, a primary school, and a building at the University of Toronto Mississauga that carry his name.

On Side C and really enjoying this album and Miles Davis more modern take on Jazz. A very controversial time in his career but I think it’s the frosting on the cake personally.
