Got it. Thanks again. I'm new to new car buying AND Tacoma buying, so I'm trying to absorb as much as possible. I'm much more interested in locking down the financing than the rebate, although I need to crunch the numbers on each. I could probably afford to pay the thing off in a year, but with little depreciation and the 0% APR, doesn't seem like I need to.

No problem, happy to help, have had 12 tacomas, friends in sales / managers at dealers, etc. pretty familiar with the process.

Exactly and if you take the rebate and finance with TFS the dealer will be playing the APR rate game with you, though I've seen people getting close to 2% for 60 months, so it might be better to take the rebate depending on the APR they offer you. Best way to look at it is try to shoot for 15% off MSRP and lowest APR , however that shell game works for you, but anything at 12% or more is a good deal.

First, let me say that I really appreciate the respectful discussion here. I also apologize if this discussion is not germane to the topic at hand. :)

Here are a few comments that I wanted to offer based on your note:

    > I appreciate the insight regarding what you have on your truck. For me, I chose the TRD Off Road because I don't have the deep knowledge, the time or the access to good people to help that you might have. It was really a buy versus build choice and I chose buy. I fully understand someone in the exact same situation would choose the opposite. I agree with you that much of it is overkill. I don't do serious off roading (or dare I say overlanding) and my 2005 SR5 has never failed. I got the OR because the gap was not huge. I do want to change the tires to the Ridge Grapplers -- I have those on my 2005 SR5 and really like them.

    > In terms of cash, that may matter or it may not. One of the things that has surprised me the most over the last 20 years is the decline of the value of cash as a leverage point. But there are much larger economic issues that have been driving that. It will be interesting to see over the next, say, one, two or three quarters, how the cash thing plays itself out. I hope it works in your favor.

    > I agree with you on the economy. The data is terrible. The recession was likely underway prior to this and it is going to be worse. Fully agree that we will not have a fast "V" recovery. This is going to be structural. Worse -- our deficits are so high already and interest rates so low -- that we can't Keynes our way out of it and back to normal.

    > Of course, all of your comments on the lockdown are political prognostications -- by the way, I agree with them -- but they do not stem from economic thinking but rather political guessing. At this point, we just don't know.

    > I did not mean to imply that Toyotas always sell and therefore they will not be impacted by this situation. Just that there will always be demand and that they carefully manage production and inventory so the drops may not be as drastic as anticipated. Keep in mind, Toyota has economists too and they are no doubt locked in their offices doing tons of scenario planning. I saw that they are managing production, opening some factories, closing others, pulling in resources, checking cash on hand (they have a ton, by the way) and seeking a massive credit line for future flexibility.

    They are clearly hunkering down:
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ek-9-billion-credit-line-from-two-japan-banks

All of that said, you are smart to wait a few months. I felt like I got a good deal and so I moved on the truck (I pick it up tomorrow). But there is no question that the prudent thing to do is wait and see. Maybe by waiting I could save another few percentage points. The real question is how deep will the discounts be if you scenario comes true? 20%? 50%? I honestly don't know but lean more toward 15% than 30%.

I don't think anyone here is failing to face reality in its full ugliness. We crossed the 50,000 fatalities rubicon today and it is only going to increase. I am in NY and lived through 911 ... and now this ... so I am seeing the ugliness every day, unfortunately.

Just got a Quicksand Off-road 4x4 for $33,834 OTD. My state tax is only $500 though so keep that in mind.

MSRP: $38,958, Sale price $33,884, $1500/$1750 rebate (they kept the same price with either rebate), $799 processing fee, $500 Tax, $151 tags/title.

I believe it's just a base 4x4 model but does have some kind of LED lighting upgrade. Not sure if it was just fog lights or the actual head lights until I receive it (getting it shipped)

At the risk (too late ) of getting off topic:

    1. I think the cash thing (not just for Tacos but anything you might buy) will hinge a lot on how credit markets and bank lending goes. So far the Fed has worked to mightily to prop both. But there is some limit to their high return moves.

    2. This is definitely a Covid driven recession, but I think the trouble had definitely begun before the lockdowns. For example canary-in-the-mine stuff like the Cass freight index was falling off and even before Covid happened in Wuhan it hinted at a softening at the least. But what is happening now is just massively bigger than anything that might have happened without covid.

    3. Indeed, I am not a political scientist. Its just a gut instinct listening to folks (including the pro-lockdown people, who sound angrier in a way that you expect people who think they are going to lose to sound) in my immediate life and social media. But the part about the diminishing economic viability of the lockdowns is for sure.

    4. I feel for you in NY. Its hard to not see the horror there. My parents are there too. I grew up there. I actually really wonder how NYC comes back from this for a long, long time. Last night I finally got around to finishing the HBO series "The Deuce" and thinking about NYC today that sad rendition of "The Sidewalks of New York" by Blondie from the final scene has been in my head all day). Things arent great in NC either, but in magnitude it just doesnt compare to what has happened in NY. Be safe brother.

    5. I would be very happy with 25%. 50% I'd be ecstatic. 15% and we'd have to take about my mortality rate from the wife :D

I agree with you on the cash situation. We could be in real trouble but the Fed will print money like mad if they have to -- at least they have shown that proclivity (right, wrong or indifferent).

What we are seeing now is definitely a Covid driven recession. I am not sure we have seen anything like this in our lifetimes -- and this is probably far worse than the Great Depression. The devastation on the job market will be long lasting, for sure.

Thanks for your thoughts. We have been hit hard. I really don't know how NYC recovers. I really don't. But then again I said that after 911 and 2008. Loved The Deuce. But NYC is not as interesting as it used to be. It is a giant shopping mall now and so many other cities are just as interesting.

I hope you get 25% off your next Tacoma! I got 13.5ish and was happy. I just think Toyota is too smart to let that happen. I think I once read the vast majority of their market is CA and TX. As long as those folks keep buying they will take a hit no doubt but survive.

Good luck to you too ... I would get out of here and move to Lake Placid but my wife informed me that I would be doing so on my own. :). The bigger concern I have is that this is the new normal ... and this will happen again ...

[ Sorry for the off topic discussion folks. But if it helps I am picking up my new TRD OR tomorrow. ]

To peoples credit, I don’t think they’re usually purposely inflating their discount. As we know, dealers have developed multitudes of ways of disguising the pricing structure. I can honestly say that I put at least 200 hours of research into this between my last 4 Tacomas when the they took me for the proverbial ride and convinced me that my trade was worth $7500 less than it actually was. So I’m fairly well-versed but for instance, The deal I’m about to take is 9.7% off MSRP but they stripped every option off of a TRD off-road so the MSRP is $38,100. Also they’re going to give me $3000 above kbb very good trade value/$500 over KBB private party value. So the way I’m computing it I would put the deal at around 13% but it’s kind of impossible to say exactly. And it’s a rare combo of color etc.

I get ya. Yes there are many aspects to a deal, but I'm gonna lean towards the internet d*ck swinging contest as the likely explanation.

Currently shopping for a 2020 DCSB OR 4X4 as well.

I emailed a dealer a few hours away and the first email I got back showed :

    List Price
    $40,166
    Rebate+Internet Savings
    $5,339
    Your Price is
    $34,827

This is for a DCSB OR 4X4, AUTO, LED headlights, and technology package. Plus a $250 "doc" fee and taxes I pay in my state.

Pretty aggressive first quote, little over 13% off MSRP w/rebate, you could maybe get another $500 or so putting you at 15% but wouldn't expect them to budge any further.

I got about 17.5 % off after rebates on my SR access cab, (before tax, dmv fees) but it's not as popular as the dbl cab trds so I think that's why.

That and smaller MSRP and a big rebate which makes for a higher %.

I've had little/no real progress finding dealers willing to work with me. I keep getting dragged around dealership to dealership and they keep refusing to work something out.

So if you were to put a finite number on my deal, where would you put it in terms of percentage off MSRP as that is the standard we’ve been using? On all the Tacoma’s that you’ve had, do you usually trade them in? What do you usually get on trade? As far as actual value I feel like getting one stripped down with absolutely no options above the base price as real value. I know it does with me because I definitely don’t want any of that stuff and it’s almost impossible to find one without any of it.
