I'm wishing I had what I thought was enough cash then and the guts to do it then. Now I'm waiting for more stable prices and more inventory. Still saving more every month. My down payment is going to be nice. I'm ready to go now but no nice deals.

May was the month to do it, and honestly, I’m not sure those deals ever return. Not THAT good. Back in May, when I saw 0% advertised online, I ran straight to the dealer. They even cut nearly 7k off MSRP too. The 0% thing was the major incentive. You save thousands on that alone.

I know but honestly if we can get back to getting around 10% off MSRP I'm ok with that. When I started to plan out the purchase I planned to pay a fair price. It's a loss in that May was probably a once in a lifetime thing. Still if we can get deals close to pre covid soon I won't be mad.

To be honest it was my son who put me in touch with this guy, I had no idea about going through someone like this. If you or anyone else would like to try it let me know and I'll pass his information onto you.

Thank you. So, if my math serves (and, frankly, my math has been known to not serve), you are at ~6.5%. Not great but in this environment 6% is the new 12%. :). Good luck !

I felt like I got lucky. And did well on my trade in. Current prices are nuts -- I get that -- but the interest rates are insane. I actually don't care that much about interest rates (within reason, of course) since I pay all of my vehicles off in 6 months. Earlier if the rates bother me. But you are right. For once, I got lucky and bought at the right time. Wish I could say I was smart but I got what I wanted (2020 TRD OR) and would not buy now anyway until things settle down. Crazy times, indeed.

You are playing it smart. Good on you ! Sit tight and be patient. Since you are in PA, do look as far north as upstate NY and northern CT. You might find a deal that works for you. But, as you smartly say, you are just stockpiling cash for a larger down payment. Bravo!

Its through that dealer, not Toyota, lots of dealers advertise this, "lifetime powertrain, etc.", knowing most will move out of state, sell the vehicle, etc. Not really added value, mudflaps $80, blackout package $130

Mine comes with lifetime oil changes for free but I have to get all the scheduled maintenance done to keep getting them free. They don’t tell you this when they advertise the free oil changes.
They offered a maintenance plan for $800 I think. Does Toyota sell maintenance plans or is that through the individual dealer? Would Troy from Greenfield be able to sell one? I’d like to keep the free oil changes but not sure how much I’m willing to pay for that. I feel like the schedule maintenance like the 30,000 mile is bs.

@averagejp the waiting sucks. It took me a year and a half to save up $12-13k so that I'd have an very easy to handle monthly payment. Honestly I could have bought sooner when I look at how much I been saving each month. Since Covid-19 there is less to do and spend on so I been stacking it up a bit faster.
I still haven't got my tax return or stimulus check yet. Those might get me a tonneau cover and some other stuff.

I'm in southern Pennsylvania so I been looking in PA, Maryland and Virginia. I didn't think to look in new York and Connecticut. I will look in to this. It's not like I can't get a train or plane ticket to go get it from here.

I feel you. Wasn't it Tom Petty who said the waiting is the hardest part? Just as an example, look at this dealer near Albany. They appear to have 9 Tacomas on the lot. That is a lot ! Just an example. I don't know where you are in PA so that may be a far drive (PA is a big state) but sending this over to you so you can see the kinds of things that might be available in the area. Anything I can do to help ... happy to do it ! Good luck and hang in there ! At the rate things are going you won't even have to finance the truck ... You might have it all saved up before this is over! :)

Edit: Sorry buddy, also wanted to pass this example along. This dealer in NJ has 12. Might be closer to you:

@averagejp they do have a lot. None the preferred color and quite a few were Access cab but maybe they can get a good volume in. It's worth a shot to watch them. I see they have a QS off Road. For the right price I could suffer through life in that :D

I doubt it will get to me having enough to pay cash, but that would sure be nice. I was going for about 1/3. Looks like I'll be putting down close to half. That's still awesome. Few people do that.

I hear you there ! I wanted a black SR5 and ended up with a gray TRD OR. No worries. I am happy. Look at the place in NJ (I edited the post to include a link). They have more. Kn general search NJ, CT and then NY as a last resort. You might find what you are looking for ! Best of luck !

It's closer than Albany is. I see they have your black SR5. I was looking for an sr5 double cab. The two colors I liked best were Cement and silver but really I could go with anything but black, it's just tough to keep looking good. I'd go with an OR to if the deal was right.

Unfortunately for me they didn't have that black SR5 when I was looking. Story of my life. Couple of strategies that might help you:

    1) Go to Dealerrater and pick out the biggest / highest rated dealers in NY, CT and NJ. Then look at their inventory. You might get lucky.

    2) Go to Car Gurus and pick a dealer in each state and do a search / sort by zip code and select a wide radius (100 miles). You can also sort by color, model, etc. You might get lucky.

I did the Car Gurus thing and found a good dealer in CT that was an hour and a half from me ... it was worth the drive ... but that was pre-Covid. We stopped for lunch, etc. Fun times. Did the whole deal over the phone. Signed papers and was out in under an hour. It was just when Covid was breaking so we were all wearing masks ... they had an incentive to get me in and out on Saturday morning.

Awesome. All you have to do is punch in zip codes further north and you will find the truck of your dreams. Should be able to do the deal over the phone given that you are a serious buyer and these dealers have grown more accustomed to that kind of thing given the current situation we are in.
