Not a bad deal. Although Tacoma’s are flying off the shelf at the only 3 Toyota dealerships we have in LV. And only 1 dealership has inventory of the 2020’s where I got mine from. Pretty happy with my purchase!

so last year I agreed to a 2020 double cab sr, 25.8k otd, about a month ago I was rear ended, after getting it fixed, claim adjusted had called me and told me the kelly blue book value of my truck was about 29k so thinking.... I went back to the dealership to see what they would give me for a trade in. I ended up getting a 2020 trd sport double cab for 34k out the door. they gave me 28.5k trade in for my sr tacoma. so I felt I ended up with a pretty good deal.20200918_173522[1].jpg IMG_20191225_090715[1].jpg

Fun fact that I’m sure many of you may already know (but I didn’t and wished someone would have told me). It seems as if Tacomas built March 2020 onward *do not* have aux transmission coolers (even Trd w tow package as standard). I know there’s some debate about whether the factory vs aftermarket matters but might be a good negotiation tactic since dealers themselves may not know (or something to *visually* verify if towing is high on the list). Note the window sticker is ambiguous either way and just refers to “oil cooler” so you have to actually check the manufacture date or the vehicle itself. Just thought I’d pass along (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/missing-transmission-cooler.671079/page-41#post-24210143 )

Stupid question. What is the main difference between a sport and sr5?

    There’s a 2020 6cyl double cab sr5 here for 33,900 that I was looking at

Yeah I've been starting to see that around and gotta say it is disappointing. I have an MT so it doesn't matter for me, but wouldn't be happy if I had bought an AT and found that out afterwards since I do tow with mine.

Would be interesting to have someone try it out with and without the cooler (would have to get hands on an early vs. late MY2020 truck) and see how bad the temperatures get. Wonder how necessary it is.

There’s Feedback here (albeit tundras w same issue https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2020/08/missing-transmission-oil-cooler-2019-2020-toyota-tundra/) showing scan guage temps upwards of 220 empty w/o coolers and if I remember the Toyota response that the new trans fluid is rated for higher temps. I’m not sure I buy that since I would think the issue is the transmission itself and I’ve got to say out here in Utah w temps exceeding 100 and lots of hill climbs I’m grateful for mine... I did a scan guage test (below) On my Tacoma w aux cooler and was hitting 192 empty on Mtn/hill climbs (steep 20 min) so I’m definitely grateful for it and hope it doesn’t go much higher w load...ps I see you’re in mn; I grew up in twin cities area.

Is this what other people are seeing.... Processing and handling fee added to the MSRP of all new Tacoma’s?

thanks for the info. I read through 7 pages of that thread...

When putting the vin into Toyota, this is what it shows for the truck I have on hold... Not having a trans cooler may be a deal breaking for me

yeah that’s basically what my description said (and I think all 2020 Tacoma’s whether they do or do not have trans cooler). To me the only way to know is to confirm if manufacture date is before March 2020, or to visually confirm — id definitely ask for a discount and confirmation aftermarket install doesn’t impact warranty

Thanks for the info... it is a little tricky to confirm because the truck will not be delivered to the dealer until mid next week and the dealer is 3 hours away (out of state).

Order date on the Toyota vin look up calls out 7/2020 so I’m sure the build date was after March 2020. So does that mean the truck doesn’t have a trans cooler at all??

Thats my understanding/ they may say technically it does bc it passes through the radiator, but it doesn’t Actually have aux dedicated cooler (the dealers themselves have apparently not realized this). It’s really easy to see if it’s There (see attached pic)- again if it were me I think adding an aftermarket is easy and may even perform better but you still would want to get $$ reduced if you can or at least confirm no warranty issues (also consider if you add it as detailed in that other thread you’d need to add extra transmission fluid). ...I suppose also you could add the scan guage (which I love) and just keep an eye on temps

Thanks again for the info, I’ll send that pic to the salesman to see if he can double check before I drive up there.

If it goes through the radiator, isn’t that cooling the trans fluid?

I like the idea of the aftermarket cooler, but a main reason I’m buying a new truck is to have everything under warranty. I’d hate to give the dealer/Toyota a reason to say it’s not covered under warranty should something fail like the transmission

I have a tendency to get a different truck every couple of years, wonder if this is a concern if I plan to sell the truck prior to the end of the warranty... I assume if the trans got hot and failed I’d be covered as long as I’m towing under the GVWR/Towing capacity..?

Sold: '19 TRD OR - It will always be in my heart.
It passes through the (main) radiator? Not sure how that would work. The radiator has water and anti-freeze, the transmission has ATF, those two would not be good to mix together. The article that was linked earlier says that in the Tundra, Toyota is using a synthetic oil that withstands higher temperatures. They may be doing the same in the Tacoma.

technically yes- the transmission is being cooled by the radiator— but I suppose most would say that is only so efficient (and typical for non-towing applications). I think what it really comes down to is that Toyota has lowered the quality of their tow package and arguably th e capability but not the price wo th in the same model year. If you’re not towing significantly and not in high temps/significant climbs it may be a non issue beyond principle/transparency. I think scan guage is a great tool so I would say it’s a wonderful truck—maybe bring it up and try to reduce selling price, and add something that you can monitor your temps so you can just make sure you stay within normal ranges—. Main reason I bring it to this forum is bc I know for some people this will be a surprise after they buy. Good luck!
