I’m curious what your recommendation would be for a similar site, but trusted and reputable source of actual msrp markdowns/what trucks are realistically selling for... thanks for any insight.

Just traded in 2017 TRD off-road and picked up 2021 TRD sport. Sticker price on the 2021 was $42,033. They took $5500 off of MSRP. After trade in and everything I only came out of pocket $3700 for a brand new truck.

That’s insanely good for any time let alone right now. 13.1% off PLUS $3000 over Kelley blue book private party sale. So effectively 20% off. Probably the best deal I’ve ever seen. definitely would not believe it if you didn’t post the worksheet. They needed one more sale to hit that big sales goal I guess. Congrats

I don’t think there is one site that will help. No one truly knows what each dealership’s actual cost is per truck. You can get close by asking for invoice and hold backs, but there’s still the incentives for moving xx amount of units. The dealership will always come out ahead, no matter how many times they tell you they’re losing money on the deal, or they can’t go that low.
I would look at the TW 2020 and 2021 prices paid threads and see if there were any recent deals in your region. Edmunds has a pretty good forum, especially if you’re leasing. You tell them your zip code, the trim level, the length/mileage and they give you the money factor and residual you should be receiving for your region.
You’ll have to do a lot of research and hit up multiple dealers to get the best deal.

Thank you, very informative! I wonder if you’d have any insight on my specific situation...
I’m moving on from being an everyday motorcyclist (following an accident that totaled my bike) to finally purchase a vehicle. I am intent on financing as I want a one and done vehicle that can do it all (daily driver and also future off-roading /overlanding). I inquired with 3 dealerships in my area for a specific ‘21. Ended up placing a special order with the 1 dealer that was more than willing to, due to having low inventory from COVID. The other 2 were trying to sell me from on-lot inventory (all double cabs with accessories I don’t want). I don’t care to pay for any packages or extras I don’t want, and I specifically want an access cab, SR5, V6 4x4.
My build won’t arrive until December at the earliest (which is fine with me as I’m on a similar timeline of recovery from my accident). In the meantime, I’m trying to do as much research as I can to hopefully get as good a deal as I can without giving up the specific truck I want/ordered. I unfortunately haven’t been finding many ‘21 Access cab V6 4x4 discussions. I understand dealer rebates or incentives will likely change by December, but how are these %’s off MSRP determined, which people are receiving? Thanks for any response

Sorry to hear about your accident. I also used to be a daily motorcyclist until I totaled my bike on the highway a few years ago.
Honestly with the pandemic and the crazy market, it’s hard to tell what a good deal is and when the market will “normalize”. The best bet would be to wait, but if you need a truck now, email blasting as many dealers as you’re willing to drive/fly to is your best bet. As far as incentives and rebates and what is good, @TacoBuffet has more experience with this than I do with Tacomas. I leased and purchased plenty of Audis, this is my first Tacoma so I don’t have much experience with what the typical market is with them. I’m sure he’ll chime in and help you out.

If you are in California, that is by far the least likely place of finding a deal. Almost nonexistent. A lot of people in California have gone to Arizona and saved themselves a couple grand. Look back through this thread for the specific people who have done this and either see if they mentioned it or private message them for the dealers that they worked with. They have processes in place for the smog regulations as well. And as kairide said you can look back towards the end of the 2020 thread for additional info as well.

As a fellow street and dirt rider, glad you are okay, have had a few injuries riding the 2 wheel steed as well. Sounds like you already placed an allocation for a truck, did you agree to any pricing prior to deposit / allocation? TRD, SR5, SR, etc. it doesn't really matter, as we discuss in the thread % off MSRP is a good measure for all of them as the MSRP reflects the trim price, etc. The one thing working in your favor is you are looking at a non TRD (most people want a TRD) and an access cab (most people want a double cab) which may allow you to achieve a higher % off MSRP, then again I know you are in Cali so that's always interesting as far as demand and pricing goes. Honestly I would stick to the mantra here of at least 8-10% off MSRP in this market and you did well. Would be a totally different story if we were not in the situation we are now. I don't see why you cant achieve 10% off MSRP given your config is not the most in demand, hopefully the rebates for financing with TFS, etc. carry over and you can get even better. I know that doesn't really help, but there isnt really much difference with discounting amongst the trims except that those that are not as in demand are easier to get higher discounts, rarely have I seen anything at or above 15% off MSRP and usually its with rebates, end of the month, model year closeout, etc. Good luck!

Thank you, I appreciate your insight!
Upon placing my specific order, the online sales manager did not bring up financials at all. I have not placed a deposit either. All of my communication with the dealer has been by email (after the initial contact phone call), to go over the trim/packages/accessories I wanted, and see what configurations were possible to order. Once the specifics were decided on the order was placed (1st week of October). I’m physically going to the dealership for the first time this Saturday to briefly talk some numbers to hopefully get a better idea of what to expect come December. Not sure how far I’ll get considering I’m not going to let them run my credit yet, as my credit still has not reflected the payoff of my motorcycle loan. I guess the practical question since I’m a car buying noob is how does one even go about “asking ” or “persuading” a markdown on MSRP? Without having any material to back up the numbers...

Best bet is to start with something like trucar or costco, then use that to reach out to other dealers to see if they can beat or match that price, then take those quotes and ask the other dealer if they can beat that price, etc. etc. Don't worry about financing yet, Toyota tier 1 is 680 FICO, not hard to achieve, but I think their rates are not really competitive last time I looked but you can negotiate that too later, your first goal is getting numbers on the new truck.

Ok, well I’ll see what I can find around, and see what price they quote me on Saturday for my build. I tried checking TrueCar just today actually, and when I plug in my non-negotiable vehicle details (access cab V6 4x4) I find nothing in local inventory to even have a starting reference point. I’m not really on board with venturing out of state, or even outside of SoCal ideally, just to find a killer deal. I realistically don’t have the time to shop around too much, as I do need a vehicle come December, nor do I want the headache of that process. And since my build preferences are pretty uncommon and minimal compared to mostly all the current inventory I’m finding around, I’m thinking my best bet will be to just try to negotiate as best I can with the dealer I’m already working with, as I’d rather pay a little more for exactly what I want, than maybe a little less for a configuration I’m not completely happy with. As long as I’m not paying over MSRP, and hopefully at least a little under, I’ll probably seal the deal. Thanks for that info about their “Tier 1” FICO being 680 and up. It’s good to know going in Saturday I’ll be all set on credit, even without it being 100% up to date yet. Hopefully by December rates may be better than you’ve seen, with it being end of year, + whatever rebates/incentives might be running then.
On another note, I’ve read that dealerships may be more inclined to negotiate if they feel confident you’ll be bringing the vehicle back for service (as they make most of their money from the service department). And since the dealership is literally on the main road I commute to work on, I’m hoping to ensure to them that they will have my service dollars to rely on. From your experience does this sound like a valid negotiating benefit? Cheers!

WOW... this is the exact configuration on my list.
I assume there is no additional dealer add-ons. Is it correct?

    Re: financing

I would do a comparison between special APR vs standard APR with finance rebate.

Sometime, it might make sense to take the $1000 off and use the Toyota Finance Rebate even the rate would be around 4.x.

Exactly, right now they are offering the $1000 to finance with TFS cause they’re best rate still isn’t as good as credit union, bank, etc. sometimes it’s great like the 0% or 1.9% instead of $1500 cash back etc. lots of variables to a deal.
