I had a similar concern/scenario when I bought my 2018. I shopped around online and requested quotes on the truck I wanted until I got the best price. The dealer I found the best deal was 2.5hrs away and they were having the truck shipped (1 week out) from another dealer that I soon found out was only an hour away from me. So I left a $500 deposit to the first dealer to have them start the process of shipping it. Then I drove to the dealer that actually had possession of the truck the same day. Showed them the quote. After a hour or 2 of sales tactics/talking to the manager I left there with the truck for the price I was quoted at from first dealer. The sales manager didn’t seem too thrilled about it but he knew I was getting that truck for that price regardless if they sold it to me or not. Plus I didn’t have to wait and drive twice as far to get it. A day later I called and got my $500 deposit back from the first dealer.

Whether I did or not....it felt like I had one over on these sales people for once.

You’re not being unrealistic at all. A deposit signifies that you will buy something. They want you to commit to buying something without telling you the price??? Asinine. All the numbers For the deal should be finalized in writing on one of their worksheets with you receiving a copy before a deposit is put down. The price might change due to incentives changing but not the dealer discount. Most likely they are just planning on charging MSRP which is fine but they should just say that.

I could not have said it any better. Yes, you should get a long page (usually yellow) with all the charges, clearly itemized, that will be included in the final price of the truck (i.e. truck price + options + registration/title + other document required by your state + taxes + any environmental charges - rebates/cashback + etc.). This is the Out the Door price. Read that page carefully. Make sure you are satisfied with the final price before you sign and put deposit.

Last week, my daughter dropped me off at the dealership to pick up my truck which was having the recall service done for the fuel pump. She has a very nice ‘19 Camry but is now interested in finding a Tacoma OR similar to mine. There was almost nothing on the lot and they told us they didn’t even know when they could get anything in. It’s not like they were trying to pull some pressure sales tactic. Believe me, they’d love to sell us a truck. They just didn’t have any because they sell them as quick as they come in. They are in short demand nationally apparently.

Ya - i was interested in a 2020 TRD 4x4 OR and while talking to the dealership about prices and discounts it was sold within 2 days. The asked if they could get the same discounts and price on a 2021 would I buy and i said heck ya! - I was kind of skeptical but they were able to do it! - I Posted the breakdown above of what i paid.

Another thing that was surprising was he said that if it takes them until next month to find this, they can't offer the $1000 cash back incentive. I don't quite understand this, especially when he started out our discussions with the incentives are whatever we can do to make a deal.

All in all, it sounds like the deposit isn't really a deposit and is totally refundable, so if they can't meet me on this price then I'll go elsewhere. I just spoke to the salesman and hopefully soon I'll be able to report back here with my pricing.

Interesting...how were you able to get over 16% off MSRP? That would be amazing pre-pandemic. What was the breakdown of the $6500 discount in terms of incentives/negotiated price?

There was really no break down it was just a discount incentive.

Guarantee there's rebates built into that / financing with TFS. And the MSRP seems off, that's higher than a bare bones AT DCSB OR 4WD, must be some port installed things in there or as he mentioned LED interior lights or whatever.

With such a large amount off MSRP, could you please post the breakdown of the $6500 off.
    • Toyota Incentive -$
    • Negotiated discount with dealership - $

That is so crazy. Buy it out of state and have it shipped for $1,000 from anywhere. My dealer had a White TRD Pro for sale for sticker no mark-up. I'm in Ohio. It has since sold. I would never pay an up charge for any vehicle.

Nice deal. Generally the dealer add-ons are not included in MSRP because they vary so much in price and usually are over priced. Still really good for this purchasing environment. I did the same thing. Just wanted the basic TRD OR with absolutely no options. My MSRP was 38,085 for a 4wd auto. Congrats!
