I'm also running an old 160gb iPod classic with a 256 ssd upgrade. Unfortunately it still crashes from time to time plugged into the Tacoma. I would say anywhere from 3 to 5 times a week, and my drives are only 20 minutes tops. I have all of my music organized neatly on an external hard drive which I then upload to iTunes. I love the idea of one of those micro thumb drives. Just to verify, if they're any way someone has found to keep playlists on a thumb drive, or at least genres?

So you lose playlists when using flash or hard drives??

Did your iPod crash before upgrading the internal drive?

Yes, the iPod has always had a crashing issue, even before the new ssd drive. And no, the playlists and everything else works fine through the iPod but, if I were to switch over to using a thumb drive, I was curious if anyone figured out a way to keep playlists without an actual iPod.
Losing playlists wouldn't even be a huge deal breaker for me, but I do occasionally use the genre sorting feature, and that could be problematic if it isn't possible through a thumb drive.

    Gotcha on that.
Mine would only crash once in a while years ago when I used to use it. I might try wiping and restoring it.

I really need the play lists to work unless playing by date added works.
It’s tough trying to restart the thing when driving

The OEM radio will only recognize 9,999 songs per usb drive. The 2 in 1 splitter will allow 9,999 songs on each drive. Both will show up in the “ source” menu on the radio.

    Which splitter are you using?
I've been wanting to do this but they only seem like they do power and not data....and you'd need a hub.

Will the 128gb work formatted as exFAT? my PC doesn't give me the option to format it as FAT32?

My unit said "not supported" when I tried to use a 128gb card but my old 32gb does work. But the 32gb is a FAT32 card.

    2020 Tacoma w JBL Thanks

I don’t think anyone answered how they format it.
Also, I thought fat32 is native pc formatting and exfat allows for pc-mac read & write....and a pc could do that?

I haven’t tired this yet, both of those parts listed above my post are “no longer available”, at least on Amazon which seems odd, they don’t seem that outdated.

I have some smaller drives I could try it with but just never got to it. The ipod was working ok enough.

My goal was to spilt the usb behind the dash and put a usb in the glove box to keep it out of sight and minimize cable mess.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
Yes, it does, and it works great. I have a 32GB drive packed to 99%+ capacity. Set to shuffle, and I never hear the same song twice. Sounds good, works good, and is so bloody small people think I just left my USB cover popped open a little on accident.

Got about 5000 songs all ripped to usb .
I miss the days of rapidshare and napster . You gotta pay for tunes now lol .
Wish I could store the music on line somewhere and make it shareable .
Tacoma world needs a site to share music as well as genuine factory repair manuals ( FSM)

Many years ago on one of the forums I was on, we had a music sharing pay it forward thing. We would take a 3 tb hard drive, fill it with everything we had and mail it to the next person in line. That person would copy all their music onto it (in addition to what was already there) and then mail it to the next person. Every 5 people had the task of cleaning out the duplicates. Once the drive was full, it would be shipped back to the first person who started it.

The best way to do it like that though is to have 10 people buy 2tb portable drives. They all mail them to a single person who condenses all the music from all 10 drives into a single drive. Then clones that drive to all 10 and mails them all back. That way everyone gets the same amount of music and the first person in line doesnt get screwed.

    Snail mail napster.

I Just picked up this Samsung 32gb for under 10$ on amizon.
Samsung MUF-32AB/AM FIT Plus 32GB - 200MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive . it is pre-formatted to fat32 and I tried it today and had no issue. The 128 GB was also a Samsung but with my PC I needed special software to format correctly so for 10$ I just got a new stick. The real problem is the amount of songs and how the head unit organizes them. Not the easiest system to use but this memory stick works fine and have more than enough space for 9999 songs. Even with my multiple 1 hour mixes the 32 gb is fine.

You can format to FAT32 in Windows without a third party utility.

Insert the USB drive you want to format, then open Command Prompt and type the following:

    Code:
     format /FS:FAT32 X:
where X is the letter that has been assigned to your USB drive.

That method sometimes does not work because of Windows 32GB limit.

The quick format command might work better.

    Code:
    format /FS:FAT32 /Q X:

I have Itunes match and iTunes radio. I quit buying albums a few years back. There are so many disappointing records from my favorite artists. I love Ozzy, the last one was meh...Joe Bonamassa's latest was completely WTF?
