Penn reels were the standard saltwater reels for decades. Now with all production moved to China, other reels have matched and in many cases surpassed Penn. Still solid reels for the money, but not the company they were 50 yrs ago. Back on topic, my current favorite setup is a 7’6” Lami custom wrapped by Red Drum Tackle in Buxton NC with a Daiwa BG 3000 reel. Great combo for throwing light jigs in the surf for puppy drum and fluke.

That's a bummer. It looks like that's what's happening to a lot of brands, It's all about the money I guess. I hope I can get to fish a lot with the one I got.

Don’t get me wrong, Penn still makes perfectly fine reels, its just that they let the competition catch up. The Fierce is a good buy in its price range.
