What are your honest thoughts on remote tailgate lock?

    Good afternoon,

I read through lots of threads on the poplock, and now the OEM remote tailgate lock. For those of you who use your truck, as a truck, what are your honest thoughts on it?

My 2018 SR utility, didn't have that function and I never added it.

The way I use my truck, I walk to it from the back, drop the bed, and load it up. If i am at home depot or other lumber/farm equipment, I go to the bed first (hands full), drop the bed, and load, and then go to the door of the truck.

If one had the remote tailgate lock, wouldn't it be more inconvenient? As in the tailgate doesn't have the touch to unlock like the door handles. So if you came with your handful of stuff, wouldn't you have to fumble in your pocket, unlock the truck, THEN put the tailgate down?

I guess, I am not talking about the safety of the tailgate being stolen, but rather the everyday convenience.

Would love to hear from some owners who have it and how they use it.

I like that I can touch my door handle and have the tailgate lock/unlocked, same as with being able to use the FOB to do it.

I like my tailgate locked. I'm considering putting a remote tailgate lock in mine so I no longer have to carry a key and a fob.

Right, that is what I thought, as dealer asked if I want it installed (only accessory I am considering).

But I guess in that case, I would have to walk up to door first, have it unlock, and then load the bed, right? Or get fob out, unlock, and then unload?

Hmm. If we dont carry a key and fob, would you leave the fob inside the vehicle? If that is the case, wouldn't anybodys touch on door open the truck? Sorry if my question is silly, I don't have my 21 yet, and my 18, I had to insert key, as it iddn't have remote or pass side key hole either.

Yes, I didn't get the option thru the dealer, I did it myself and only spent $8.00.

Both ways would work. Either touch one of the front door handles or use the fob to unlock.

Sorry if I was unclear. I keep a fob and tailgate key on my keychain in my pocket at all times. I'm considering putting a powered lock in my tailgate so I wouldn't have to carry a key for the tailgate anymore.

I'm not even sure if the Tacoma will lock its doors with the fob inside of it.

I love the tailgate lock. I leave the key in the truck at home and take it with me when I'm somewhere. It's never been an inconvenience, but it's been super handy to lock up when I'm out.

I'll agree that it sounds like a locking tailgate could be an inconvenience. I can also see where a locking tailgate that works via a key fob could be convenient if you lock your tailgate. I'm thinking a remote locking tailgate would be more convenient with a cap, or bed cover.

I have the OEM one as well as a BakFlip MX-4. Makes it easy making sure the rear bed is secured.

With the amount of tailgates getting stolen..Chevy’s, Ford’s too...
I think with one click you lock all the doors and tailgate...nice feature to have..

Just imagine your hands are full when you come back...the tailgate is stolen...making it easy to unload your hands..nice of them?

The truck won't let you keep an active fob inside of the vehicle. If you try to lock it it will immediately unlock and gripe at you.

My tailgate locks and unlocks with the doors. It took some getting used to but I really don't mind the inconvenience.

It was the first thing I did to my truck (other than swapping tires) and it's one of the best mods I've done. These tailgates cost an arm and a leg to replace, I'm not about to let someone take off with mine that easy.

Did you see the people who can customize (full size trucks)..the tailgate that will slip under the truck bed...?

Will Tacoma’s get a built in steps ladders in the tailgates like the Fords and Chevy’ trucks..?

Replacement for. Tacoma tailgate...most insurance cost will be approx $1500-$2000...or more..

key fob locking system or Manuel locking...Best to keep your tailgate lock!

just saw a site if you remove the tailgate..and not planning to put it back..they sell plastic plugs for the wiring holes to protect against rain and rubbish..
Also saw Toyota dealers give free passenger seat belt extension for pregnant women?

My 2015 will when not in ignition. Ask me how I know.

But then again I don’t have touchless entry or push button start. :anonymous:

Our Camry with touch less entry won’t allow us to lock fob inside though. Maybe if I manually set the locks it would.
