talk with your dealer and you can usually get it cheaper... some dealers charge more than others.

Use whatever type the manual/dipstick says in whatever brand you choose. It will be fine without "toyota" fluid as long as it's the right stuff.

you've opened a can of worms here buddy.

"which oil" is a never ending debate, often resulting in at least 1 or 2 people crying in the corner, and everyone feeling like they have THE answer.

So let's start, shall we?

I'm of the opinion that the type of oil you use really doesn't matter that much, what matters is the maintenance. I would say (generally) the cheaper the oil you get, the more often you should change it. If using (or not using) a certain type of oil may lead to voiding a warranty, then that's something to keep in mind, too.

I personally wouldn't go as far as buying that discount "store brand" stuff, but I'm not really sold on the uber expensive stuff either. Expensive doesn't always mean better, or at least better "enough" to justify the cost.

It only says "use toyota type 4 ATF" it does not say anything else. Just wanted to know what type atf others use instead of the "type 4 toyota atf". I know everyone likes there own brand and dont want to start that brand war haha

    yep... my mistake

My excuse is I don't have an auto trans.
But I do use it for my power steering fluid.

I only use Toyota labeled ATF.
'cause I don't trust the aft mrkt offerings.

    Right on, and agreed.

All transmission fluids are aftermarket. Toyota fluids are made by someone else, as Toyota does not have their own refineries. BTW, the AW4 trannies were also used by Jeep/Chrysler among other brands. Meaning, those other brands, won't use "Toyota" brand fluids.

Toyota ATF is squeezed from only the freshest, finest whale foreskins harvested by artisanal Japanese whalers - all other fluids are merely imitations and cannot possibly be of equal quality.

Really, what price can you put on quality?

    Toyota Type 4 here.

your dealer prices are horrible! I called my dealer to see what they wanted and it was around 6/7 a qt. got a case off Amazon for cheaper with free shipping.
did one drain and fill, and will do another at my next oil change and another a couple oil changes after that.

i paid 62.50 for 12 qts, now its 68.12 for 12 qts. comes out to 5.68 per qt

I used valvoline atf today :bananadance: i think mobil, valvoline, and castrol make better fluids than oem toyota uses for much less $.

I take my 4Runner to a buddy's shop that does BG System Flushes and replaces the fluid with BG Synthetic. Works great. I've had no issues.
