I have been wondering about the rear axle for some time. Over the weekend, a buddy we went wheeling with said the rear axle of the Tacoma's are comparable to Dana 44 axles. I questioned this and he assured me he was correct.

Is the rear Tacoma axle comparable to the Dana 44?

This has been a debate for years. In my experience I have found them some where in between a Dana 44 and a 9" ford. That is the old school 8" Toyota axle. This new 8.75 axle to the Us market (used in the Hilux for several years) should be marginally stronger than that.

Axle diameter is still smaller than Toyota.

I've never ever seen a broken rear Toyota axle, even spools with 35s. I have however seen broken CV axles, but they are made of peanut butter compared to a proper axle. The bearings are substantially larger than a comparable jeep axle.

That said I would never run over 35's, especially with spacers, it really shortens the life of the axle bearings.

The ring gear is close to a Dana 44 but it is in no way close to a 9 inch because a 9 inch ford has the third bearing on the pinion which Toyota does not. The axle shafts on a Toyota are very durable.

It's not the size of the shaft, but how you use it.

This post is getting somewhat old but I feel this is the best place to ask.

Does anyone know this 8.75 axle GAWR? And can confirm it has a 32 spline count/ 1.31in shaft diameter?

I cannot find the article I used as a reference sometime last year..

Edit: found this saying 32 spline. Reliable source? Nothing for gawr. https://www.justdifferentials.com/ARBRD232-p/arbrd232.htm
