Wow that is a surprise to see the same battery in the base model as a TRD.

My 2017 TRD Off-road with tow package has 24F.

    My 2008 Pre-runner came with a 27F.

would likely happen regardless as its a heavier load being placed on it

They're all 24F for 3rd gen, and they have a pretty crappy load rating. But them being 24F has nothing to do with that.

Group size just determines the form factor of the battery for the most part, what you're really concerned with is capacity, and you can (and probably should) get an increased capacity battery if you start adding accessories. Things to pay attention to are CCA at 0* and reserve capacity for the battery.

For example, a Northstar 24F battery blows most standard 27F batteries out of the water: http://buy.northstarbattery.com/p/nsb-agm-24f-battery

I haven't really looked into batteries much but I know overland bound posted on his instagram that many told him not to go with an optima. and I think he went with the northstar.

Was talking to a guy at work today that does battery systems for UPS systems
    talking battery banks like this.
    20161214_140246.jpg

So figure you know these guys do it daily day in day out, they know more than your average joe about batteries. He was saying the same thing though. When it comes to AGM batteries Optima isn't what it used to be. odyssey are much better

My TRD Sport w/ tow has the same exact battery. For what it's worth, I had the battery health measured a few months back, and despite having the same CCA rating of 5xx amps, it was putting out well in excess of 800.

No issues so far, but I haven't really used it all that much. It wasn't even hooked up for a few months and held its charge very well. Between the good reviews and Crappy Tire warranty, I don't anticipate any problems.

I'm trying to decide what battery to go with for my dual battery setup

Basically only going to be there for running a few lights, winch and maybe a fridge one day
given the other AGM are upwards of $350+

Do some research on the topic of main vs aux battery for winch - there's a lot of good discussion on Expedition Portal about that.

Also, when running batteries in parallel, you want to have batteries as similar as possible. Again, lots of good info on ExPo.

I don't think that's an issue. More along the lines of group size and capacity.

For example, when my aux battery was not hooked up to the main, I was running it in parallel with a smaller lawn-mower battery. So I had a ~79ah (can't remember exact value) group 24 in parallel with a 20ah lawn-mower battery, and I *thought* that would actually give me a total of 99ah with no downsides. Reality was that I actually handicapped myself with that move and was getting less use out of the system than if I had used only the 79ah. I don't know/remember enough about the subject to explain why, but it was explained to me at some point (on ExPo), and it made sense.

    its because its in parallel.

if it was series it would have been more.

I had a Ford battery die at 9 months. I was fortunate that I had boat with me and an extra battery that was charged.

Okay, you're going to need to explain that one.... I'd think the load would be biased onto the higher capacity battery due to the lower capacity battery's supply voltage dropping faster than the the higher capacity battery's supply voltage. Not my area of expertise, but also not strictly Ohm's law territory either... :)

All batteries die at some point... best bet if you are going to be out in the boonies is to use 2 and have both come with the best possible no hassle warranty. Id rather run 2x $100 batteries than 1x $200 battery. But if I had to, odyssey all the way or its rebrands.
