I never use that 4 dollars crap. I like taking care of my wheels, and I always tell my customers to go with a better filter. Some listen some don't.

Thanks for the info. Is there a place we can buy stock filters in bulk? Or by the box? I wouldn't have to do so much driving.

The Pennzoil/Quaker State old wives tale myth is about 50 years old. Today's Pennzoil and Quaker State products are as good if not better than any OTC oil out there. UOA on the BobisTheOilGuy.com are supurb for the Pennzoil products, and are as good as many of the overpriced and non-API approved boutique oils.(Amsoil,Redline,Shaffer's,Royal Purple ect.) You can use them with the utmost of confidence. Just avoid the Quaker State with Slick 50, a holdover contract from there previous owner. Just dont take your truck to Iffy Lube.

There are a lot of good filters in the Wix $6 price range. Napa Gold is made by Wix and is identical. Purolator Pure Ones are excellent and have a higher filtration rating than Wix. Motorcraft oil filters are also excellent. Wix and Napa Gold are the equal of the overpriced Mobil 1. If you put a decent filter and new SM/GF4 rated oil in every 5000 miles, the engine will last longer than the rest of the truck. Probably more important is to make sure you are using a quality air filter, changed at reasonable intervals. Fine grit will cause more wear than just about anything.

Amsoil all the way, in everything. However Amsoil switched to a Mann oil filter for my vehicle over their EaO.

K&N oil filter and Mobil 1 5w20. I change it every 6 months or 5000 miles like the manual says while the engine is under warranty. Once the warranty expires I may just change it every 5000 miles.

Then got a good deal at Kragen Auto parts for some Castrol GTX 5W30 oil 5qts for $10.99.

    Now I'm all confused.
I got my first new Taco last month and I want to take care of it.
If that means using Mobil One I will.
But if you can get by using cheap oil and filters and get 223,000 miles with no problems, why pay double for oil.
Seems like a waste of money to me.

Can someone answer this for me? I know nothing about oil.

As long as the oil label shows the latest API certification (not sure if it's CG or CD or something else now), and is the correct weight as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer, it's safe to use. Some people trust name brands more than generic, but my brother in law has been using Flag and Wal-mart brand oil for years without any problems. All API certified oils have a minimum content of anti-sludge dispersants and cleansers. In the end, the best type of oil is 'changed regularly.' Synthetics (Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, etc) provide slightly better lubrication and can go longer between changes than petroleum based oils, which is what the extra cost pays for. I would use synthetic if I was hauling or towing on a regular basis. But if you are not hauling or otherwise stressing or putting heavy load on the engine, petroleum-based oils are fine for the average driver. Filters can be described the same way - there are adequate filters and there are excellent filters. As long as they are changed regularly you should be fine. Myself, I go with name-brand petroleum oils, whatever is on sale (Valvoline, Castrol, Chevron Supreme, etc) and a decent filter (usually NAPA or Purolator) so an oil change costs me about $15 plus my labor. Interesting note: some old motorcycles don't even have oil filters, and as long as the oil was changed regularly, they ran a very long time.
