Thanks for the detailed description. It helps a lot.
It makes sense to me that if you change the oil on a regular basis with simple petroleum-based products and don't stress the engine you should be fine.
And a good filter of course.
I've heard you can go longer with full synthetics but not changing your oil every 5000mi. affects your warranty.
I would be worried that they wouldn't honor the warranty if I changed the oil every 10,000mi.

use mobil1 filters, they're the same thing and a dollar cheaper.. like not "same in quality" like same plant same parts used same templates

I do my LOF every 3,000 miles. Going a year, 10K, 15K on a oil change...N.U.T.S. (to me at least)

I run a Full Syn, usually between Valvoline and Castrol. I would prefer the Castrol every time, sometimes the Valv is on sale, gotta save a buck where you can, still quailty oil. Wally World typically has 5 qts jugs for a little over $20 of either one.

Oil for the most part, and for what you need it for comes down to really 4 basic choices. Within each group is so many different variants.

A Convential oil - pure, basic stuff.

A Semi-Syn Oil - A blend of Conv. and Syn. Get some of the benefits of a Full Syn without the higher price.

A High Mileage Oil (A semi-Syn with a tad extra for high miles)

Or a Full Syn. - the best of the best.

Most of the difference is in molecular structure. The molc's in a convential oil all vary. They are of different sizes, some small, some larger. In a Synthetic Oil, all the molc's are supposed to have uniform molc structure. This is important in how the oil breaks down. The engine will break down the small molcs in the convential oil faster than it will break down the uniform molcs in a Full Syn.

But really, just change the damn oil, REGULARLY. Only bad things happen when you don't change the oil. The oil itself, even the convential can last for quite awhile, it's the additives in the oil that wear out and then thats when damage starts happening. (Think Sludge). Additives wear out, oil gets overheated and turns into sludge. It gums everything up.

Regardless of the oil you choose, just freaking change it on time and you should never really have any issues. Some like the full syn, it does improve gas mileage a tad bit and IMO, I think an engine just overall seems to run a little better with a Full Syn, but that might just be in my head.

Is power steering fluid lighter than brake fluid?

SO... if i found out my son added a small amount of power steering fluid to my brake fluid can i just flush the reservoir? He only braked twice, once backing out and once pulling in.

I use factory oil filter with 10-W30 Valvoline oil. It seems to work well.
