    I shoot with a Nikon D3400 w/ 18-50mm 2.8 & 50mm 1.8 However, I'm in need of an upgrade...

I'd like to stay with Nikon just because I have the lens, but I hate that Nikon hasn't done any upgrades to their 'DX' entry level cameras since 2017.. Their full frame cameras are out of my price rage and if I switch over to Canon or Sony; I'd be starting from scratch, which means $$$.

With only two lenses I wouldn’t call yourself heavily invested in Nikon to where switching systems would be hard.

What about your D3400 are you trying to upgrade? Autofocus performance and speed? High ISO performance? Bigger, better viewfinder? More on-body control wheels and customization? Your photos say your doing just fine with the 3400...

    Most important: What’s your budget?

The easy Nikon upgrade button is a 7x00 series camera, or a D500. Hell the D610 is cheap right now too:

Only Fuji and Pentax really focus on their APS-C lineups, because that’s what they offer most.

I’m looking into in autofocus/focal points and it’d be nice to have 4K video capabilities.

My budget isn’t all that big. I’d probably cap out at about $1,000 for camera and len(s).

I have been looking around for reviews and comparisons on multiple cameras, but I haven’t decided just yet. I’ll probably hold off for a few more months and see if the holidays bring some good deals.

    Sorry in advance.

Looking at buying my first camera and budget is somewhere around 500.00 obviously I’d prefer to go less and less as possible since I don’t know how dedicated I’d be to it. But what are some good dslr. I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max that does an amazing job but it doesn’t replace a stand alone camera after seeing some our wedding pictures.

I reached out to our photographer and she said everything she shot that day was with her canon rebel’s but didn’t really elaborate on which ones and I felt bad tying up her time once again. We had a few other people using nikons at the wedding but I haven’t reached out to them on what types.

So does anyone have any suggestions?

Is buying used a viable option if the camera appears in good physical condition?

What would be some things I would look for?

the only reason I bring up used is after searching fb marketplace for just a few moments I noticed you can find some really good deals that come with lens kits bags, one included a pelican case with cut outs for the camera, extra battery, charger, two lens, etc.

You could pick up a used D300 or D700 for next to nothing (I still have both as they are not worth much to sell). They are both great cameras that produce a great quality image. I don't know how they compare with new tech now though as even an entry level dx camera might well be better overall spec wise...

EDIT: scrap that... I see you want video

Lol, nothing like reviving an old thread, I see just just 10 posts back we were in April 2019!

I have too much gear as I've never focused on selling it and I've always thought it'd be handy to keep just incase... I'm a full time photographer so by the time I buy a new piece of gear it's because something has worn out or not working correctly...

    Nikon D300, D700, D800, D810, D850 x 2
    Nikon 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, 105mm 2.8 macro, 35-70 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 24-70 2.8 vr, 70-200 2.8vr, 70-200 2.8 vr FL
    Tamron 15-30 2.8 vr MK1
    Lots of Godox lighting equipment.

    I shoot people in love...

As soon as Nikon release a mirrorless camera that I'm happy with I will be switching to mirrorless...

I keep all my gear in a humidity controlled cabinet cause it's humid over here and stuff gets wet when it rains...

You see much of a difference between the 800 and the 850?

850 does everything I need just wondering if there’s really enough to make the upgrade?

Yeah I love it. It is definitely a better camera in every way but... The D800 (if you got a good copy) is a very capable camera (maybe not video, but I have never used video). Why do you feel an upgrade to the 850 is required? What are you using it for? Personally I'll be moving to mirrorless. A few things that attract me is the live view exposure in the viewfinder, VR on the sensor and weight.

If you are set on sticking with DSLR and NEED to upgrade then the 850 is awesome, wait for a killer deal and jump on it. I haven't' looked at prices recently but if U could get the 850 for less than $2500 I'd be happy, even happier if they threw in a grip too...

EDIT: A problem with the 850 is megapixels, too many for my liking. Super sensitive if you have subpar lenses, eats memory card space and you need a faster computer if you are expecting to be able to edit quickly. I'd be happy with 25MP...

Sorry meant to say the D800 does everything I really need.

Video is pretty dang good on it. Only used it once but it really stood out to me. I don’t do much video though. The mirrorless are just too small for me. I like a camera I can get a grip on.

I know what you mean I have big hands and I have grips on all my cameras. 850 feels perfect to me.

I have to get on a plane if I want to go to a camera store so I haven’t actually held a mirror less yet. I’m waiting until they build one that has a grip option and then I’ll rent one. By the sounds of it there should be one coming soon.

You won’t be able to sell the 800 for much so run it into the ground...

I'll ask for a camera recommendation too. I'd love to keep it simple. But every time I go out camping, hiking, biking or star gazing I consistently say; I really wish I had a better camera (ok...A camera, b/c my iPhone isn't really a "camera").

So, to shoot cars/trucks, nature and night sky, can I get away with 2 lenses? One for night and one for the day? A tripod for the camera too. And hopefully something to edit pictures easily w/ on a Dell computer? I'll check that link posted above and do some research there too. But if there's a quick answer, I'd love to hear it!

What’s your budget and what’s your end purpose aka do you plan to make prints (and if so how big) or is it just for web stuff? Any desire to shoot video?

I generally say stay away from entry level bodies. They tend to have severely crippled performance against the mid tier cameras for not much of a discount.

If you only really care about photography, any mid level dslr from Canon or Nikon will work fine.

I shoot Pentax because you get much more IQ for your money. A K70 or KP with the DA 16-85mm and DA 55-300mm PLM lenses will give great performance in a compact and handy weather sealed package. The lenses aren’t “professional” grade but they’re several steps above the consumer level lenses from the other brands for $450-600 each.

I don’t know as much about the mirror less cameras, but Fuji glass is superb and the bodies are pretty if you did the techno-retro aesthetic (I do). Sony make good cameras but they’re aps-c glass isn’t as good. m43 cameras from Olympus (RIP) and Panasonic and the rest are supposed to be excellent, and the lenses are generally good to excellent, but I never wanted to shoot a sensor that small.

I made the switch from Canon to Sony last year and couldn’t be happier. Went with the A7Riii. A bit overkill honestly, I’ve also shot with the A7iii and it’s great. Decently affordable too. I would definitely go mirrorless if you can

Bought a used d3300 a year and a half ago on a whim, I've grown to appreciate the artform of photography and wanted to get more hands on with it. Came with a nikkor(?) Afs 18-55 lens and I have a 70-something macro lens my dad had from the 90s with no auto focus, made me have to get good at manual focus so I dont mind it. I definitely want more lenses but they're very expensive and I wouldn't even know where to start as strictly a hobbyist so I make do, here are a couple of my favs!IMG_20200428_212209_898.jpg IMG_20200426_201212_218.jpg IMG_20200420_113013_942.jpg IMG_20200413_174652_624.jpg IMG_20191027_215550_232.jpg IMG_20200428_211806_791.jpg

If you want to ‘learn depth of field’ then you can’t beat the 50mm 1.8. A very versatile and affordable lens, there’s a reason it’s called the nifty fifty. Your cat will love it also...
