I could shoot with primes all day :) I'm loving these.

Now have, 35, 50 and 85mm f/1.8s and I haven't touched my tele or wide angle in quite a while!

Do you find more use out of the 50 or 85?

Oh, man. It's really pretty close. If I'm going to be in close quarters I take the 50 but for personal style/preference I have to say I like the 85 better. I like to grab shots from a distance when people don't always know I'm getting them. But indoors your pretty much not getting every shot because you'll be too close. It's 50/50 for use with the tip of the hat going to the 85 for personal preference.

Great thread. I'll post up since I love photography..I just haven't had time lately. I've been building up my Nikon collection for 25 years now and am thankful they stay with the transition of older lenses with new bodies. I shoot with a D80 and have my two "go to" lenses as a 20-35 2.8 and a 60mm macro. I use a 85mm 1.8 for portraits and like the whole wildlife thing with my 80-200 ED 2.8 and 300 ED 4 (although these two EDs weigh a whole friggin lot). Lot's of other lenses, but these are mainly my primary lenses I reach for. THANKS FOR RE-FOCUSING ME ON THIS!!!

Okay guys, so I need some help.

My grandmother is looking to buy a dslr for my grandfather and wants to know which one I recommend.

He has always had a camera for as long as I could remember, but has never had a dslr. He is also not the average grandfather when it comes to electronics. His job has been to create programs for various companies for as long as I can remember.

So my issue is that I can't just search for a good beginner dslr, because although he's never had one he's very tech-savvy and is in no way new to cameras, photoshop, etc...

    Thanks for any help! Haha

Canon 60D would be good entry level, but more bells and whistles than my t3i. what brand does he shoot usually?

or the 6D full frame if price isnt an issue

I think in the past he usually used a Fujifilm or maybe Sony.

Haha Yeah, I'm thinking I'm going to stick with recommending a Nikon or Canon.

You need to find out what kind of camera he's used in the past. Because it it's a Nikon....he can re-use those lenses on most new Nikons (which he would appreciate I'm sure). I'm not sure about the other brands.

Ask Grandma for a budget as well. Depending on his experience level full frame may or may not be recommended. I'd hate to get him something that's completely foreign to him, but it would also suck to get something that's a step down and his skill is already beyond.

The other thing to consider is weight. Is he pretty hearty/healthy? I ask because I have hand and back injuries, among others, and my lightweight body and lenses pay off big time. He's not going to like lugging around a cinder block if he has any issues there.

I would recommend a D7000/D7100 (depending on budget) or if she's really not set in a DSLR, maybe a Fujifilm X100 or X100S.

My personal set up is here's for lightweight and I love it.

    D7100
    3 primes
    A few other things.

D7000/D7100 are very beginner friendly for someone trying to learn the DSLR ropes and yet have plenty of room to grow into as skill level goes up. 7100 is a little lighter.

Snap, I'd love that or a D4, but then again I only paid about a grand more for my truck so . . . I'm going to keep in the hobbyist realm of things (where I belong) for now.

Happy for you though. Enjoy it

Thanks man. If this were my hobby I wouldn't have bought it but since it's an investment for my carrier I might as well get one :)
