Never heard anybody recommend a d7100 for a beginner...

    LOL!

That was my feeling when I was talking about my D3100 and BGE started on the 7100.
Awesome camera, overkill for those just looking for something better than a point-and-shoot.

OTOH, if you've got $3k+ for old school....

The simplicity of control and aethetics of classic 35mm, with the advantages of a DSLR.
Still has the LCD display and most of the rear panel controls are the same, so it CAN be controlled like the D3/4/5/7x series, but includes the added controls on the dials on top to get the exposure controls away from the digital menus.

And I wouldn't. I would recommend a mirror less interchangeable lens micro 4/3 or Sony NEX or something. Note the second remark saying if one wants to grow into a DSLR, not just any camera and not just an everyday point and shoot person, but someone who wants to take photography seriously and knows that they want a DSLR, THEN I would recommend the D7000 or D7100 because they will not have to buy a 3100 and then upgrade a few months to a year later when they grow out of the camera.

D7100/7000 is a good camera to "grow into" for someone dedicated to growing and wants a DSLR.

Most people don't need a 3100 even. Especially when mirror less cameras offer smaller/lighter/cheaper options with equal or better specs in some cases.

I hope that clarification helps the recommendation.

I guess I understand what you're trying to say, but I'm not sure I agree.

And there's no way I would tell somebody to spend the same amount(or even more) on an interchangeable lens camera such as the sony nex series or nikon 1 or new nikon aw line. They would grow out of that so much more quickly than a d3100.

But to each his own :D

I had no idea where you pulled that quote from so I went and looked at context. Did you read all of the backstory? Because his grandfather obviously isn't a noob and he specifically said he can't just get him a beginner level camera. So I mentioned a nicer than beginner level that he can either grow into or if he's already good won't be so crappy that it's limiting him. You gotta quote context if you're going to quote someone. Changes the last bit entirely.

How do you look up how many shutter releases are on a D7000? I have one that I need to get rid of.

When I did it I uploaded a recent RAW file to a program online but I don't remember the name of it.

What I said had nothing to do with a backstory on my end. My statement was black and white, I've never heard that before.

As far as the nex 6, it's more compact, cool.

What you heard had context is all my friend.

I simply asked how one would grow out of the NEX 6 quicker than the D3100. You would have been better off pointing out that it has far less lenses available presently than to say something snide.

If civil discussion of cameras can be had I will stick around, but let's not taint this thread with this kind of banter. I meant only to explain my position, not start anything. My apologies if I came across as otherwise. It is hard to convey much through typing.

    Good day, sir

In addition to the T2i that I mentioned on the first page, I have a point and shoot Nikon Coolpix S8200 that I use when I need something that is lightweight and that I won't worry about getting dusty or dripped on. It takes pretty good pictures, if you ask me:

That spider is awesome. I never would have guessed it was a spider without seeing it in a web.

Seriously! Australia has some super weird animals. I think that's my favorite picture from my study abroad there.

Canon 1D MK IV 70-200 USM II. That's a nice lens but my fav is the 85 1.8, they forgot to put the red ring on that one.
