    HI All,
New here to the forum, and love reading everything I can....
Just purchased a 2016 TRD 4x4 Offroad in quicksand with most every option available. I think leather and electric seats are all it does not have...

So here is my basic question, I have 5k to spend on what ever... what do I spend it on? What are the things to do first with this truck? It seems pretty capable already???

We live in San Diego, and our travels routinely take us to places like Borrego Springs, Baja, Mojave Road and Death Valley.

Am ordering a AT Habitat (that will be extra of course) which weighs in at 350lbs dry.....

I'm not a desert racer or boulder crawler but like to get to places that most can't and be able to hang there for a few days......

So $5,000 isn't a lot in the scheme of things but it is enough to get started and do some damage...so to speak! Lights sliders bumpers tires something electrical??? Like to gauge some options from those who know, who have been there done that with these trucks

    THANKS FOR YOUR THOUGHTS!
    Gary

Welcome to the forum, bumpers and a roof top tent.
Here’s my RTT, no money for bumpers yet.

Your truck is extremely capable as is, mines basically stock and I'm surprised the places it's gotten me, although it's had minor bumps and bruises along the way. I'd save your money and either put it into something other than a vehicle that's going to depreciate no matter what you do to it, or send it to me so I can! Haha

Seriously though get some good tires and you'll be amazed what the truck will do without any other modification. Second thing I'd address I guess is the wimpy rear springs. I added a leaf into the rear pack a while ago and also just put bilstein 5100s all the way around. Some people laugh at them too but man I gotta tell you how useful having a camper shell on the back is, especially with the foul weather we get around here.

But also seriously if you took a loan out on the truck I'd put the money into actually paying it off before blowing it on mods.

As a financial advisor with a tacoma habit:

    Pay off loan
Better leaf springs, and may as well do better shocks to accommodate the habitat
    Better tires
    Sliders to protect the bodywork

    Even better.

Tacomas are super capable stock. For 5 Gs, you could upgrade to full kings for 3k-ish, better tires for 6-800, and pick up a set of sliders, and still have enough for a steak and a scotch when its all over.

    Habit...obsession...addiction...a problem...

    Depends on who you ask.

Wish I had a habitat, but decided to go a different route before i knew they existed. Plus its hard for me to drop that kind of cash on a camper/rtt. I'd rather build an expo trailer i can stage somewhere, or have an old wrx grocery getter.

This...or take the money and invest... even safe bonds and mutual funds can get you more than 2.5% return. Easy!

Skid plates! IMOP, must be the first addition. Nothing like going out having a good time and finding you cracked your transfer case or transmission or oil pan. Good time over quickly.
My first excursion with my Tacoma, I put a big gash and dent in the crossmember. I'm lucky I didn't get anything critical.
