Not old at all, for the most of us we are trying to keep the road ways safe. I am only 24 years old and when I was about 15 my mother was a Paramedic and was called to a scene while I was in the car. Once arrived there was a mustang, camaro and a van. The mustang and camaro were racing, and the van had a couple and their baby son. The guy in the mustang survived and that's it. It was on a back country road, hardly any traffic ever. But it only takes once. How do you think that guy feels that was in the mustang? He ended up putting a bullet in his head about a month later, and I can only assume because he couldn't deal with the guilt.

Compared to the 70's era engines the 4.0L in the Tacoma is very powerful for it's displacement.

2008 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Access Cab.
    4.0L / 244CI @ 236 HP = 59.0 HP/L
    236 HP / 3965 Lbs = 0.06 HP/Lb.

    1971 Ford Torino 429 CobraJet
    7.0L / 429CI @ 370 HP = 52.9 HP/L
    370 HP / 3140 Lbs = 0.12 HP/Lb.

Something more comparable to the Tacoma:
    1971 Ford F100 Pickup
    3.9L / 240CI @ 145 HP = 38.5 HP/L

Horsepower per pound is double for the Torino over the Tacoma but HP per Liter is impressive for the newer engines.

This is a cut'n paste from the thread about cutting up street racers cars from a couple of weeks ago. It's how I felt then and how I feel now....

When I was 20,I bought a CRXsi that I repetedly tried to kill myself and others in.Invincible and in total control?....Not by a long shot.By the grace of God I wasn't responsible for anyone else's injury or death.Actually when I think about how I used to drive that car it makes me shudder.I don't think I was a bad person, and I don't thiink that kids street racing are bad people....What I think is that I didn't,and they don't have any idea what chances are being taken with thiers and innocent others' lives.

In my 20 years on the Fire Department,a number of years riding our Heavy Rescue,I've had the unfortunate opportunity to cut both dead kids and innocent motorists out of the carnage caused by people just having some laughs.

Sorry to sound preachy but Street racing is no good..:(

    Some one forgot their division.

.06 hp/Lb ? Well then, that would make for a insanely fast vehicle.

Another thing to keep in mind when quoting HP facts and figures is that the older vehicles are rated in Gross HP. Not NET like modern cars. Subtract 20-30% from the gross to get the approx' Net output.

Anyway, this comparision is apples to oranges. A perfect example would be this.

    2006 Lexus IS350. 0-60 - 5.2 seconds.
    1/4 mile 13.7@104mph.

    That's with 306 HP(277tq) in a nearly 3500 lb car.

That's a fairly quick street car. My wife and I have one and I can attest to that.
0-60 in 7 flat & 15.2@91mph just isn't very much now and days. Yes, compared to 35+ years ago those were pretty good numbers.

One last thing if I may? When did you ever see a 71' big block Torino weigh in at 3170lbs? Maybe with the engine out of the car.

You have completely misunderstood my post. I wasn't saying the Tacoma is faster or more powerful than a Torino. All I was pointing out was that HP per Liter has increased over the last 30 years. You may think you are arguing with me but you helped prove the point with your Lexus reference. 306 HP from a 3.5L is 87.4 HP/L compared to the 429 Cobra's 52.9 HP/L. You seemed to disregard the part where I did compare a Tacoma to a 70's truck with a similar displacement engine.

I found several weights for the '71 Torino. From 4100# for the Cobra to 3140# for the 2 Door Hardtop. I went with the lower weight for the benefit of the doubt. If I had shown 4100# someone would have come back with the lower weight claiming I had been unfair.

236 HP divided by 3965 Pounds = 0.06 HP per Pound.
0.06 does not make for an insanely fast vehicle. It is the opposite. 0.12 HP per Pound is twice as much power per pound. Even using the higher weight of 4100# the HP/Lb ratio for the Torino is 0.09 or 50% higher than the Tacoma. Your Lexus is very close to the 429 Torino with 0.087 HP per Pound.

If you were to use real numbers for 0-60 and 1/4 mile times the 2006 Lexus IS 350 and the 1970 Torino CJ were nearly identical. Do you think people are going to look back in 2044 and think of a Lexus sedan as being a muscle car? Probably not but the numbers kind of prove that it is.

i hope you're talking about beating all those cars in your VW, cause i know there's no way your little I4 hauled all 600 lbs of your muscle (not including the banana hammock) fast enought to beat those vehicles. except the B2500, i beat one of those on foot before :)

Sorry, I'm guilty of not reading the entire concept of the post, and then posed prematurely. That happens when you get to be my age. :p

I thought they were asking what vehicles did you have before your Taco.

I'll go back to the bench and hang my head in shame coach. :p

It's because he is very large. I've never seen anyone in a Ford Festiva who wasn't large. And it wasn't even the size of the car making the driver look large.

I've got a buddy that had a Festiva back in the day...Charli's right,he's 6'3,280 or so.

He told me once that the Festiva was actually a Mazda product and overseas called the Mazda 121.
