Something with fan or fan clutch

at end of vid fan is spinning freely for 5-8 seconds after shut down

should have some tension, even with engine at rest

my first thought was timing chain slapping against the guide and with AC running it was putting engine under load and intensifying it :: phew::

Mine made a similar sound, but it was gradual in sound and intensity. It was my failing crankshaft pulley moving so far in and out that is was hitting another engine part at that area. Luckily, it was just the bad crankshaft pulley with no damage to the interior spacers, requiring major work.

Almost immediately upon cold start. Visually check if it’s moving in and out. By the time mine made a clacking sound, the pulley was moving in and out very noticeably.

Does this crankshaft assembly come as one functioning piece or do you just replace the inside pulley?

It doesn’t appear to be moving in and out like me crankshaft pulley was. Looks stable. Might want to look for other causes.

Take all of the belts off and starti it up cold, if it is still there then it is in the motor, if not, put the belt closest to the motor on and repeat, then the next belt, then the next.

There seems to be a lot of play in the crankshaft pulley, even under the tension of the belt, which is snug. You can’t see in the video, but the area directly behind the pulley where it mounts has a lot of wear from rub. The metal has a shine.

My theory is when the engine is cold, it settles back and everytime I start it up, it rubs, then backs off when the belts are under load and pull on the assembly.

That is clearly a failed harmonic balancer. In my opinion there isn't much more diag that needs done. The pulley has separated from the rubber. You should not be able to move it like that.
I have not changed one on a 3.4 but they are all pretty similar. I believe all three pulleys come together on the 3.4. So you remove the belts and the center bolt, pull the pulley and install the new one. I think there was something about the key moving on people when reinstalling it so might want to check into that on the forums here.

I agree. Thanks for your input. However, since I will have to remove all belts, I may as well start the vehicle and determine if the sound is present.

I would stop driving it immediatly... nothing but bad things can happen. If the person doing the job does it incorrectly it could cost you a motor.

    TW saves another engine!!

    great find/notice Taco302!

Unk your financial situation, but if your able to, look into H20/oil pumps to get replaced
(Once your there, your talking extra 10-12 bolts a piece for both pumps….and piece of mind)

    Search “starter pump method “

and get a crank pulley holder tool to torque the crank bolt

Aside from HB failure, something still wrong with fan clutch….should not spin that freely

I DIDNT READ ALL THE RESPONSES AFTER THE VIDEO OF THE PULLEY MOVEMENT...
THATS THE NOISE AS SUGGESTED, SHOULDNT BE ABLE TO SLIDE IT LIKE THAT..

DONT RUN IT AFTER REMOVING THE PULLEY.
The back side of the pulley keeps the timing belt from sliding forward if its a t belt motor...
Even if its a timing chain motor, dont bother...
Also locks the gear from wanting to slide forward.
No need to double check, thats the noise.

3rz here…is the HB on 5vz interchangeable? Is it the same part? Every search I’ve done only has the entire assembly that includes all three together as the 5vz part.

    @betterbuckleup

Looks very different in these pics

    https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,2003,tacoma,2.7l+l4,1418442,engine,harmonic+balancer,5512

I’d put your vin in PartSouq.com and see what you get. OEM for $250 on the 5VZ is like $400 less than domestic online dealer prices.
