You might have to file down the depth stops slightly

Angle may have been too flat. I always use a round file at 30 degrees. As I’m moving forward I twist slightly in a clockwise motion

    Edited

if a new chain it shouldn’t be an issue but the rakes might need to be adjusted slightly if an older chain. I don’t do this often because if you don’t do it right it will try to cut circles

Did you also file down rakers?

Thanks, if the bite limiters are filed down too much it will bog but what about if the bite limiter needs to be filed?

That's what I was leaning towards.

I'll try 30*, I didn't check with a square but the marks on the harbor freight sharpener said it was about 35*. I typically use a round file but they're all at work so I borrowed the electric sharpener.

The chain is pretty old, about 2 years, maybe 50 cutting hours on it, it's been sharpened a few times by hand.

Negative, I didn't have a flat file on hand to touch them.

I'm considering getting a 20" skip tooth chain for the 20" bar and going with an 18" bar for my general use, the 20" seems on the verge of too much bar for the 271 and I only need the 20" for felling and flush cutting.

If the rakers are too tall, they'll prevent the teeth/cutters from cutting and you'll see a lot of dust as a result. If the rakers are too short, the teeth/cutters will grab too much wood and that could cause bogging down if the saw is underpowered for the blade/bar setup.

No need to be super precise it is more of a uniform angle. Too steep it dulls quickly and too flat will bog down the saw. Either one will also cause your saw to buck or kick back more aggressively. One thing you mentioned is that you were stumping with it...that being said you may have hit dirt or some stones that took the sharp right out of the chain.

For my usage, I've found that I have to file down the rakers every 3rd sharpening.

I decided not to do much today just because it’s so nice out and I felt kinda blah all morning. But kicked things in gear enough to hang with brother joe.

I don’t know...that sounds like a great day off to me. Hahaha. Some of my best memories involve cutting and splitting firewood. Stay safe...

Heck yea... we play it safe and recycle the laid trees. So much goes wasted. We give most of the wood away to whom who “need” to heat there homes. Been doing it 2 years now. Well this is our second year. Makes you feel good inside knowing you can help people by just giving wood.... go figure ;-)

I took the bite limiters down a hair and re-sharpened the chain, it cuts really well horizontally but the grain of the wood must stop the cut progress vertically, it still doesn’t like to cut down.

Going to drop an oak tree tomorrow morning that’s already been limbed:thumbsup: sounds easy ... we’ll see how this new saw does. It’s not close to any structures and we’ll haul to brother joes to split and add to the pile to give out next year:thumbsup: only concern is that the ground is very moist due the all the rain we’ve had last couple days. We may have to work them 4x4’s to haul the wood out... :fingerscrossed:
