Check out :bore cutting". You can theoretically cut down a tree 3 times your bar length. I don't, but have seen it done.

Notch, bore out the centre from the notch, bore from one side, then the other. Hinge made, tab at back made...then final cut of the tab and the tree is down.

If I were to do it that way I could drop a 6 foot diameter tree (24 inch bars), but I won't unless it's only 30 feet high.

Sorry, 3 feet high (on edit)

Are y’all breaking your saws in or do you just run them hard right from the start?

I've been running a Stihl Ms362 cm for about 7 or 8 years now. 25" bar, and full chisel chain. The computer is starting to give me fits, so may have to do a relearn on it. No pictures of her at the moment

Bore cutting is nice and pretty easy once you do it. Keeps you out of way of the tree as well

Per my Uncle who is a Pro Arborist and the Stihl dealer where I bought my MS261, Stihl recommends going easy for the first three tanks. I guess just don’t run it full throttle?

But I am having a real hard time with that so I wanted to see what others did.

Not sure about stihls but I know husky say to run them through big wood for I think 5 mins when you first get them. Helps the auto tune out. So I figure whatever I do won't hurt em

I let new power heads idle for at least 2 full tanks before they get put to work.

After that it’s in the operators ‘hands’.

I have abandoned all gas engine tools and gone electric with the EGO brand. I have their 18" chainsaw, 10" pole saw, and string trimmer, plus a couple of 5aH batteries & chargers. At 70 years old, I find that I'm exhausted after exhausting both batteries, so we make a good team, LOL.

Idle? A 2 stroke can’t even get up to operating temp at idle can it?

I have a Dewalt 20V for small stuff which I love. But not enough power in the battery tool yet for real cutting.

I do use battery blower, trimmer, and hedge trimmer.

Well I’ve babied it for the first tank but I’ve got some work coming up, bigger trees to drop and buck. So break-in period may be over haha

Can you show me where that is in the saw manual - for a Stihl?

    Depends on the model:

440’s have it inside the back cover, right under the warning about blowing the panties clear off your girl.

I’ll check where it’s at on the 500i later when I’m back at station.
